Balancing a New HR Role and MBA Night Classes: Am I Making the Right Choice?

sohini basu roy
Hello, this is Sohini from Kolkata. I am in a fuss and need your help. Actually, I was previously in sales and marketing. Then, very recently, I got an opportunity in an IT company to work as an HR officer/manager. Now, I am planning to do my MBA. I am appearing for the February MAT and have decided to join an institute in Kolkata only, for night classes as I am not going to leave my job. I want suggestions from everyone if I have made the wrong decision. I am a bit tense too as I have heard that it is tough to maintain both a job and studies together. Is it so? I am an ordinary student. Please give me suggestions. I am looking forward. Thank you.

Hi Sohini,

Whenever you make a decision, ask yourself, are you satisfied with the decision that you have taken? Everyone can have a different opinion. We all can share our opinions with you; however, at the end of the day, it's you who has to make the decision. Don't get nervous but take it as a challenge and believe in yourself that you can do it. If you can manage it well, then I think you will be able to do it. I think you have made the right decision.

Dear Sender,

First of all, please confirm whether you will be able to manage studies as well as your job. Don't try to ride two horses at a time, as this is not a circus. Whatever action or decision you are taking is solely vested in you, and you are solely responsible for its pros and cons.

Thank you, Kumar, for your suggestion. I have been told that it is not possible to do two jobs at a time. However, I want to express that since I have already joined the job, it is very difficult for me to leave. I also don't have much time on my hands to quit the job and start studying again. I am aware that it will be very hectic for me, but I have to manage it. Still, I appreciate your suggestions. I would like to receive more suggestions, and I will do my best to give equal importance to both works. Thank you once again, Kumar.

Thanks and regards,
Sohini

Dear Sohini,

Nothing is impossible, and what you have decided is the best thing you could have done. I know many individuals who have gained weight in their professional careers after pursuing an MBA (Distance Learning) alongside their job. You only need to properly plan your timing. I assure you that you will achieve success.

NKT

Thanks a lot NKT, but the thing is I will be doing a regular course rather than distance learning. What do you think in that case? Please reply, and thank you once again :)

It was only an example of DE. In your regular course, as I have said, you only need to properly plan your timings. In my organization, three persons have passed their regular MBA course (evening course), and they are getting lots of opportunities nowadays. To add further, they are all above 35, and I suppose, as your earlier comments suggest, you are more or less still a student. So go ahead and don't get yourself confused over the issue. You can do it, and you have to do it.

Thanks once again, dear. I am gaining my confidence, you know. NKT. I know I can do it, but as I left my studies a year ago, I was getting confused. :) Thanks, thank you a lot. Keep in touch and keep giving me suggestions whenever I need. I will expect all my seniors and friends in citeHR beside me.

Thanks and regards,
Sohini

Hi Sohini,

This is Somdatta. I'm also from Kolkata and newly joined this forum. As you mentioned earlier that you were associated with sales and marketing, how did you make a direct transition to becoming an HR Manager? Did you pursue any HRM course? I also don't have a degree in HRM but aspire to build a career in HR. Could you please guide me on the path you took?

Regards, Somdatta

Swetha said, "Well, I agree with her and you too, Sohini. I'm a technical recruiter in an MNC and doing my MBA through distance education. I'm enjoying both, and I hope you will reap more benefits by choosing a regular program. Definitely, you will enjoy your job and perform well in your studies because here you will learn what you do and you will do what you learn from the books.

Many times I felt bad as we don't have the chance to pursue a regular course while working, but you have that opportunity. Go ahead and do well. I wish you all the best! :icon1:

Hi Somdatta,

Yes, I was in sales and marketing, then left the job. I was at home. Then, I posted my CV to consultancies. As I was the team lead, I had the knowledge of recruitment and giving training, although in a different field. Then, I got a call from my present company. I explained my past job profile to them. They were actually looking for a candidate with good communication, confidence, handling power (handling employees), and of course, interest in learning the work. That's it, dear :) Actually, the thing is, I was lucky enough to get those persons who evaluated my inbuilt capability rather than my theoretical knowledge/certificates on the interview board. That's all... :) :)

Thank you!

Hi, Sohini - from which institute are you planning to do your MBA evening classes? Is admission through MAT? Just for my interest, could you please tell me?
aranyak bhattacharya
Hi Aranyak,

To be an HR professional, Somdatta, you should have a degree in HRM. From my perspective, you can join any institute that offers an MBA in HR after passing MAT or CAT. I am also a student in the 3rd semester of MBA-HR at the University of Burdwan and currently undergoing training at a well-known company in Kolkata. This is based on my own experience.

Best of luck to you!

Regards,
Aranyak
