Sandwich Leave: Understanding the Concept

Sandwich leave is a term used to describe a type of leave where an employee takes time off work to attend to personal matters, such as medical appointments, family emergencies, or other personal obligations, in between two working days. This type of leave is often granted at the discretion of the employer and may be paid or unpaid depending on the company's policies.

Rules and Regulations of Sandwich Leave

The rules and regulations surrounding sandwich leave can vary depending on the organization and the employee's contract or agreement. Some companies may have specific guidelines on how sandwich leave can be requested, the notice period required, and whether documentation is needed to support the leave request. It's essential for employees to familiarize themselves with their company's policies regarding sandwich leave to ensure compliance and proper utilization of this benefit.

Hi, The sandwich policy is a general practice followed by companies and organizations where a usual week off gets clubbed with the paid leave applied by the employee just near the week off and is treated as a leave day.

Sandwiching of Leave

Sandwiching of leave refers to the act of marking the holiday intervening between two leaves as 'leave' instead of treating it as a holiday.

Whether a holiday coming in between two leaves should be treated as leave or a holiday will depend upon the type of leave and the nature of the industry. In a factory, the holidays intervening between two 'earned leaves' should be treated as a holiday, and in no way should the said holiday be sandwiched as leave. However, The Shops and Commercial Establishments Acts are silent about the treatment of holidays intervening leaves. The principle is that leaves earned by working for a certain number of days in the preceding year should be exclusive of holidays. At the same time, if you are sick on Saturday and Monday, it should be construed that you were sick on Sunday also. If you have a personal emergency on Saturday and Monday, let Sunday also be considered a personal emergency.
