How Do I Kickstart Training for a Disorganized Team? Seeking Advice and Materials

Respected Seniors,

I am working for a USA-based firm. This is a new infrastructure with a team of 30 employees. Today, I am going to provide training to all. The employees are very unorganized and lack proper motivation. I have two ideas: firstly, to provide them with training on team building, and secondly, on motivation.

Please advise me on how I should commence this training. Seniors, if you have any training materials, please share them. I know how I should present this, but I am slightly confused about how to initiate, what to do in the meantime, etc.

Hi Sushma,

I think first of all, you should do some ice-breaking exercises with them. In the ice-breaking session, you can ask them to do some pairing or group activities. Try to be innovative when conducting the ice-breaking session and note down the points where you will focus next time.

If you are not a trainer, first learn the basics of how to deliver effective training. As a trainer, every day when you go to the office, all employees must respect you and recognize that you have come for their good; otherwise, it is difficult. Only then will your training be effective.

Since your organization is new and the participants are unorganized, please design your training program in a way that will make the participants aware of the purpose of their gathering.

It is important to note that no one can motivate others; therefore, plan your training program effectively before conducting it.

I am a Bangalore-based freelance corporate trainer who also provides HR consulting services.

If the employees are disorganized, then training may not be effective at this stage. We train our staff to develop skills and knowledge. No training program can make employees organized.

Does your company have a mission and vision statement? If not, please advise your management to create one first. Following that, you should establish department-wise mission statements.

Additionally, you should develop a process manual for each department. Creating a process manual will facilitate measuring process variation. If the issue is due to human error, provide training to staff to meet process standards. If it is a process failure, then adjust the process.

Furthermore, set Key Result Areas (KRAs) for each department and assign responsibilities to each Head of Department to achieve the KRAs. A focused approach will help in eliminating unnecessary activities.

As you mentioned that you work for a US-based company, please let me know if you work according to US time. Try to understand the company's expectations from the employees and assess if the employees are capable of meeting them. Seek feedback from individuals to identify and evaluate any existing issues. Subsequently, offer solutions such as training sessions, motivational activities, etc.

I tend to agree with Ravi. Also, I feel that it's your perception that they are not motivated. It may be because they are new to you, and you are new to them. Try to establish a rapport with them and then get into training. Please get the basics of training and communication brushed up before presenting yourself. It may help in increasing your acceptance.
