Maternity Leave Dilemma: Do We Pay Salary During Employee's Absence?

lavanyaS
Hi everyone, One of my employees has taken leave for her daughter's birth. So, we arranged for a substitute for her place for two months. Kindly let me know whether we have to give a salary to the person who has taken leave.

What kind of leave have you granted to her? If any type of leave is due and is granted with wages/salary, then you are required to pay salary for the leave.

Hi, Normally, such long leaves for more than a month will be considered a break in service, and the employee might not have such a huge leave balance in her account. Therefore, it is at the discretion of the employer. If the employee has been working for many years and is a key performer, the available leave balance may be adjusted against the total leave period, and the balance period of absence will be treated as leave without pay.

Hi Lavanya, kindly review the company leave policy document. Whichever rule follows the applicable leave (applied by the employee & approved by management), you may decide upon the compensation.
