How Can I Resign After Taking an Advance Salary to Care for My Paralyzed Mother?

shiba-prasad-bhattacharjee
This is regarding my resignation in February 2022. My mother survived a stroke and is now paralyzed. For the medical expenses, I have taken an advance salary from my company, and now I want to resign from the company as my mother needs the utmost care to recover. I don't have anyone at home to take care of her. Therefore, I require suggestions on how I can resign.

Dear Shiba Prasad Bhattarcharjee, what has happened with your mother is unfortunate. I wish her a speedy recovery.

Adhering to terms of separation

Whatever may be the reasons, the terms and conditions of separation specified in the appointment letter must be adhered to. Therefore, return the salary advance, submit a letter of resignation, complete the notice period, and leave the company without hassles.

Applying for Leave Without Pay (LWP)

As you need to tend to your mother, if you are unable to work, then you may apply for Leave Without Pay (LWP). However, there is no guarantee that the company authorities will approve it. It is just a matter of taking a chance.

Facing setbacks in life

Setbacks in life are common. Everyone faces some setback or another. However, never ever think of abandoning employment. It could aggravate the problems further.

Thanks,

Our senior member, Mr. Dinesh, has contributed sufficiently to address your query. However, in your post, you have not mentioned the length of your service in your current company.

If you have been with the company for a long time, please consider having a dialogue with your manager and HR head. After informing them, try to meet with your Chief Executive to explain the situation. There is a possibility that they may waive off the notice period as a very special case, on compassionate grounds.
