Understanding Leave Policies: Can You Carry Forward or Encash Sick and Casual Leaves?

Dhanashree Sheth
I want to know whether we can carry forward sick leave and casual leave for the next year. Are these leaves encashable?

If an employee is leaving the organization, do all types of leaves get encashed or only earned leaves are encashable?

Dhanashree,

This is at the discretion of the company. Many organizations follow different practices. Some allow CL/SL to be carried forward up to a certain extent. Some companies have a yearly encashment. Some have encashment only on the occurrence of death, resignation, or retirement. Business & HR need to decide this, keeping in mind the financial implications.

Hi,

Only paid leaves can be carried forward to the next year, and moreover, only this leave gets encashed at the time of separation.

As I mentioned, it is at the discretion of the company, and there is no absolute conclusive practice for this.

Hi,

This is as per the company's policy. Mostly, paid leaves are allowed to be carried forward but with a maximum limit. In some companies, a staff member is allowed to encash only during separation, either by resignation or retirement.
