Feeling Lost as an HR Fresher: How Do I Navigate Constant Role Changes and Lack of Support?

It's been 5 months since I started working for one of the reputed organizations. I'm an HR fresher. When I joined the organization, they told me I was in recruitment. Then I was trained in it, and later, for some reason, they put me in learning and development. Two of my colleagues left payroll, so to fill their place, they have now put me in payroll. I am so confused and am not aware of what I'm doing, so I wanted to know about my roles and responsibilities. I went to my boss asking about this. I was surprised; he simply blasted at me and didn't respond well. Even though my approach was polite, he chased me like a dog.

What should I do now?

I don't feel like being in this organization. Also, I'm not getting any motivation to work for the organization. Please help me make a decision.

Dear friend, what has happened to you is unfortunate. When one gets tossed around even within the department, one's psychological well-being is bound to get disturbed. I empathize with your situation. Nevertheless, my suggestion is just to push on since you say that it is a "reputed" organization. Please note that each passing day adds value to your CV. Getting a job is difficult. Getting a job in a branded company is still more difficult. Therefore, my recommendation is to accept pleasantly what comes in your path.

One should devote oneself to work. However, this alone is not sufficient. Consider yourself as a facilitator who assists the HOD in the smooth working of his department. Therefore, devote yourself to your HOD as well. If you make a shift in your mindset, it will reduce ill feelings in your mind for being thwarted in attaining your goals.

General comments: Whenever a junior's work activity is changed even within the department, it merits taking the junior into confidence. The interesting thing about this post is that it has come from a junior in the HR Department. The HOD of the HR Department has mishandled the situation. Far from counseling the employee on the need to accept what comes in his path, he exploded with his emotions. HR professionals have a penchant for talking about employee engagement, emotional intelligence, and so on. But when it comes to implementing these theories at their workplace, they abandon the theories. This is a classic example of it. With this type of behavior, can the originator of this post engage with his work or his company? It is a point to ponder.

Steps to Overcome Payroll Challenges

This is a very good opportunity for you. I have overcome this situation with the steps below, which may be helpful for you.

1. First, understand the concept of payroll (Attendance, Earnings, Deductions, Statutory Compliances like PF, ESI, TDS, PT).
2. For your reference, search on Cite HR, CA Club, and YouTube to gain knowledge of different practices.
3. After that, understand the salary structure of your present company.
4. Take the last 6 months' attendance and raw salary sheet and start processing the salary.
5. Cross-check your output with the actual; I am sure you can become an expert.

Keep in mind never to repeat the mistakes you made earlier.

One of the major elements of human resources is payroll processing, which involves processing the salary of each employee working in the company in a timely and accurate manner. There are many aspects to which an HR professional needs to contribute to payroll:

- Payroll is a process of calculating employee wages and salaries, which recurs every month or week.
- HR's role comes into play right from the joining of the employee, designing salary structures.
- Then checking attendance, leave balances against leaves taken, and calculating gross wages as per leave deductions.
- HR needs to take care of statutory compliance like PF, ESI, and PT deductions.

Understanding Your Role as a Fresher

Being a fresher, you cannot dictate terms to your employer. Getting a job, especially as a fresher, is not easy. Initially, you may not fully understand how an organization functions, and mistakes can happen. It's important to apologize, learn, and understand your responsibilities. Payroll is not a bad area of work. Recently, I was at a B-school discussing recruitment. I asked 35 students what they would like to do after graduating, and 30 of them said recruitment. Do you know... it is like the path of least resistance, simple to operate, a kind of white-collared broker role. It offers limited opportunities to showcase your talent.

Exploring Other HR Sub-Systems

I asked the students why they are not considering other HR sub-systems like Competency Mapping, Performance Management System, Training & Development, etc. This preference for recruitment reflects the current mindset of youngsters. They seem reluctant to spend time learning skills necessary to become successful HR professionals. At this age, it's crucial to learn all you can and not be selective, as this can increase your weaknesses. To become thorough, seize all opportunities that come your way.
