Balancing Motherhood and Career: What Part-Time HR Courses Can Boost My Skills?

Sanjana8
I was working as a senior HR executive in a domestic BPO 2.5 years ago in HR operations and completed my MBA in HR. Now, I just want to utilize my time by taking some part-time HR courses as I am still unable to work due to having a small baby. Please suggest some HR courses that can enhance my skills for when I restart my career.

Dear member, you mention that you are currently on a break and prior to this, you completed your MBA. Could you clarify whether you pursued your MBA through correspondence or as a full-time course? Additionally, what is the reason behind your interest in pursuing a certification course beyond your MBA? I do not intend to imply that certification courses lack value; however, it is essential to ensure that such a course enhances your employability.

In the meantime, I recommend staying updated on the latest HR practices. You can explore this forum to review the discussions on various labor laws and topics related to core HR functions. The responses provided by senior members can be highly educational for you.

Have you been applying the knowledge you gained during your MBA studies? If not, I suggest revisiting the books and study materials you utilized during your MBA program. Often, our academic curriculum may not fully prepare us for the practical challenges we encounter in our professional lives. To excel in your career, it is crucial to expand your knowledge beyond the syllabus. Many individuals with MBAs lack a strong knowledge base, and establishing a solid foundation is key to achieving success in your career.

Thank you,

Restarting Your HR Career

You have made the decision to restart your HR career. Good decision. Until you land a job, update your knowledge with amendments; for example, maternity leave has been increased. Forums are a good place to read up by using the search button.

Exploring HR Courses

There are various courses on the market, but one has to decide how useful they will be. You can opt for evening classes, etc. There is plenty of material online as well, like the Harvard Business Review (https://www.sumhr.com/hr-tools-onlin...professionals/).

Job Search and Preparation

Keep an eye out for suitable jobs. Have a professionally written CV ready. With the right attitude and knowledge, jobs will become available. Work-life balance will have to be carefully maintained. Best of luck.
Great Manager Institute
Hello, congrats on your new baby! Honestly, there's nothing half as powerful as being a mother. Coming back to your question, since you already have over two years of experience in HR, we are sure that the next job offered to you will be at a managerial or sub-managerial level. What's better than preparing for your first-time managerial experience? We suggest you take courses related to communication, time management, and team-building, which will go a long way in building your profile and making you appear more confident in interviews.

Do check out platforms like Harvard Business Review (https://hbr.org/), which could provide you with a global certification. If you are looking for something more local and relevant in the Indian market, you can check out Great Manager Institute (Early Users of GMI | Great Manager Institute™).

We are sure that as a mom, you already are a good manager at home. What's better than being a 'great people manager' at work too?

Do some HR-related courses online or through LinkedIn Learning. If you can leave the house for a few hours, consider Six Sigma or Total Quality Management type courses, or advanced HR courses like HR Generalist. If you can't leave the house, try LinkedIn Learning. If you are interested in Labour Law, update yourself on the latest developments.
