Understanding CEO Expectations: What Do They Really Want from HR Managers?

SURIYA7
Dear Sir,

My name is Suriya, and I work as an HR Executive in Generalist roles for a reputed manufacturing company. I am very eager to understand HR matters from the perspective of the MD/CEO. I have a query for your valuable insights – "What does a CEO/MD expect from an HR manager?" and how a CEO/MD is keen to ensure HR tasks are completed.

I kindly request your input on this matter and welcome any valuable suggestions you may have.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Suriya

Dear Suriya,

There is no standard set of expectations that a CEO has from HR. Expectations vary from one company to another and from one person to another. Therefore, the right thing for you is to take feedback from the CEO and work on it.

By the way, do you report directly to the CEO? If not, then understand the expectations of your reporting authority. While managing the expectations of the CEO, if by chance you may sideline your own immediate boss, then that would be a great risk.

Thanks,

Dinesh Divekar

Dear Surya,

As an HR professional, your job roles and responsibilities mainly include recruitment, attrition control, and solving employee-related queries. Every CEO/MD wants to reduce costs and improve profits. Mr. Dinesh Divekar's words are also valid because some CEOs/MDs expect employee satisfaction along with profits.

As an HR, you can control costs through manpower budgeting. Instead of just satisfying your MD, focus on satisfying employees by providing them with benefits according to standards.

The CEO/MD of any reputable firm would have the following expectations from the HR team/dept:

1) Excellent linguistic skills

2) Introduction, adoption, and implementation of best practices

3) An updated HR policy that covers the legal/statutory compliances

4) A humane benefits policy that supports both the employer and the employee and is in line with industry standards

5) A productive workforce - something you need to spend most of your time assessing and tweaking to ensure maximum output

Thanks!
