Feeling Stuck in HR: How Can I Gain Core Skills for Career Growth?

vijaykannan0077@gmail.com
Hi, this is Vijay. I want to know about my future career.

My Current Role and Challenges

I completed my Master's degree in Master of Social Work in 2016. I have been working in the automobile service industry as a Human Resource Officer for the past year. In my current role, I am primarily involved in attendance marking, housekeeping, and security measures. I feel that I am not exposed to the statutory and core HR processes that I would like to learn for my career growth. What should I do to pursue my future goals?

Feedback and Areas for Improvement

I have attended more than 10 interviews, and the feedback I receive is that I lack good communication skills and subject knowledge. Currently, I am handling only minor tasks. Do you think my current job will be beneficial for my future? If not, what steps should I take to improve my prospects?

Dear Vijay,

Your aspiration to grow your career is understandable; however, the most important thing is command over English. Your communication skills are poor, which you have also admitted. The way you have written your post hardly aligns well with an HR Officer. Therefore, the first step should be to improve your English. Work steadfastly on that. Improving knowledge of HR is a little way off.

Thanks,
Dinesh Divekar
