Facing Unfair Exit Demands: How to Handle Being Asked to Pay for Missing Funds?

Hi, I am working in the telecom field as a coordinator, preparing all the reports. I submitted my resignation on 15th May 2017. However, my manager is asking me to clear dues for which I am not responsible, as I only handle reports from the system. The actual money is managed by other staff, and for the missing transaction amount, my manager is insisting that I pay upon my exit. It's equivalent to my one-year salary. What should I do? I have no involvement with the money, only with taking transaction reports. Please suggest. Thank you.

Dear Abdul, you were responsible for taking out the transaction reports from the system. Was your job just to take printouts and nothing else? Were you responsible for checking the transactions and identifying discrepancies? Were you responsible for the reconciliation of the transactions? For what time period has the discrepancy in the transactions been discovered? The way you have written the post indicates that you would like to absolve yourself by laying the blame at the doorstep of the field staff. How acceptable this will be to the senior authorities of your company depends on the nature of the case.

Anyway, you may submit an application to conduct a domestic inquiry to ascertain culpability. This is the only way to show that your hands were clean.
