Seeking Recommendations for Practical Books on Industrial Law – Is ND Kapoor's Mercantile Law Enough?

Respected All,

I need a good reference book on industrial law issues because I need to have practical knowledge on them. What I know is ND Kapoor's Mercantile Law, and I am required to buy this today. Kindly suggest to me if this is fine and if there is another book on the same.

Thanks and Regards,

Hi Pallav!

If you are looking for commercial and taxation matters, I don't know much. But if Industrial means or includes Labour Laws, I personally feel "Labour & Industrial Laws" by P L Malik is the best.

Mercantile Law is different from Labour Law. N.D. Kapoor is good for mercantile law. For labour law, you can refer to P.L. Malik. It's really very good.

Dear Sir,

By industrial law, I mean the following:
- The Factories Act
- Workmen's Compensation Act
- ESI Act
- Employees' Provident Fund Act
- Payment of Gratuity Act
- Maternity Benefit Act
- Payment of Wages Act
- Minimum Wages Act
- Industrial Disputes Act
- Industrial Employment Act
- Trade Unions Act
- Payment of Bonus Act
- Apprentice Act
- Employment Exchange Act
- Collection of Statistics Act
- Labour Act
- Sales Promotion Employees Act

Is there any quality book that provides updated information on these aspects to keep me updated with the latest rules applicable for the organization? Some of them (marked) are mandatory to be followed as per the latest amendments. I require this information to apply effectively with details on legal clauses and applicable forms. I need enough information to implement without the least help of consultants.

Kindly help.

If you want, you can refer to "Labour Laws: Everybody Should Know" by H.L. Kumar. It gives a brief idea about some laws you mentioned. Please go through it once before buying. We were recommended the same for our course.

Is there any difference between Industrial Law and Labor Law? Kindly differentiate in an industrial scenario.

Well, you can also refer to O.P. Malhotra's Law on Industrial Disputes in 2 Volumes - Butterworths Wadhwa publication 6th edition.

If you want to stay updated with the latest case laws, rules, and amendments, you should subscribe to any premier labor law journals.
