Starting Competency Mapping in HR: How Do You Begin Without External Help?

Starting with Competency Mapping

Many times I have wondered what happens to an executive when they are asked to start a new activity. My struggles to grasp new material up to the level of implementation have prompted me to do this. Today, I am starting with Competency Mapping. When we are required to work on competency mapping, where to start is the question I am handling for the day.

Please find attached a presentation and a questionnaire embedded in the presentation file. The questionnaire is somewhat custom-made for my requirements; however, I believe it provides a good understanding and a way forward for implementing Competency Mapping solely by HR without external consultants.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this. I will try to post a few more documents along these lines sometime later.

While developing the PPT, you could have given a reference to the book or website from which you prepared the presentation. The reference is missing. On slide 7, you have titled this slide as "Other Meta Skills That Can Be Included." However, the preceding slides do not mention the definition of meta skills.

Definition of Meta Skills

Meta skills are defined as "Metaskills are higher-order skills that enable journalists to use their skills effectively. Metaskills—such as critical thinking—are what make the skills effective. Without metaskills, skills are like a hammer in the hands of a child." On this slide, you have mixed up "personality traits" and "skills." Both are independent of each other. Please confirm how the following can be considered "skills": uses common sense, cooperative attitude, dependable, fast, flexible, loyal, outgoing, pleasant, self-starter, etc.

On the last slide, there is an MS Word logo. You could have uploaded the document on Google Drive and provided the link. Clicking on the logo does not take us anywhere.

Final Comments

You must have made efforts to develop the presentation. Nevertheless, what goes into the public domain is always subject to scrutiny. Hence, critical appreciation of the PPT is necessary.

Thanks,
