Drafting and Implementation of new HR Policies - joining a startup company as an HR manager

Kavitha Goud
Hello, I am Kavitha. I am joining a startup company as an HR manager - I need suggestions on how to implement HR policies.

Dear Kavitha,

What would be the nature of your industry? Overall how many persons are employed? What is the scope of expansion in future?

If you are yet to join the company, then I recommend you joining the company first understand the culture of the company and then take a call on what policies are required. Even though it is start up, I recommend you doing so. Understand the owner's psychology, understand what would be your authority. Without taking stock of the situation, if you start devising the HR policies then it would tantamount to jumping the gun.

Before devising the policies, I recommend you doing audit of the HR department as a whole. Find out first whether functions of erstwhile Personnel Department are followed or not. While HR has evolved from the personnel function, the latter has vanished per se. Occasionally I find that HR professionals get caught in the jargon of modern HR leaving lacuna of personnel function.

Earlier I had given reply to the similar query. Click the following link to refer it:

Hello Kavitha,
Welcome to the Forum. Since you are going to start your carrier in HR field, I assure you will get valued suggestions from experienced members on various related topics.
The functions of HR are very vast and changes time to time in accordance with structure, size, ethics, strategy of the company and ruling law of the govts. Rightly suggested by Mr. Dinesh "first understand the culture of the company and then take a call on what policies are required" and have an audit over the issue.
However, pls find below some common policies and procedures followed in general.
These are the common topics, for implementation you can elaborate them in detail in consultation with your management or consultant.
