President Pranab Mukherjee Approves Maharashtra Factories (Amendment) Bill, 2015
President Pranab Mukherjee has given his assent to the Maharashtra Factories (Amendment) Bill, 2015, allowing women to work in factories during night shifts. The amendment bill modifies Section 66(1)(c) of the Factories Act, 1948, to ease provisions related to women's night shifts in the state.
Key Facts
• The amendment of the 67-year-old Act mandates factory management to ensure the security of women working night shifts.
• Prior to the amendment, Section 66(1)(c) of the parent Act did not allow women employees to work in factories during night shifts between 7 PM and 6 AM.
• Apart from this, the amendment bill enables workers to be eligible for paid leave after working for 90 days in a year, instead of the current 240 days or more.
• Additionally, the amendment removes the requirement for workers to obtain management's permission for working overtime. In this regard, the amendment bill increases the working limit to 115 hours from the current 75 hours over three months.
With this, Maharashtra joins the list of six Indian states that have already allowed women to work night shifts or are in the process of doing so. These states are Rajasthan, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh.
