Study Leave Should Be Considered In Total Experience Or Not

Dear all,
Please help me in resolving this query.
One of my friend was working as an engineer in a plant from Dec 2006 to Aug 2008.In between he had taken study leave for 1 year. Now he is having nearly 8 years of exp but if he includes this study leave period ,then it comes to 9 years .
So he should include this period in his experience or not.

Its long term leave so better don't show that in your experience letter and next company will appreciate the same.if short term leaves then u might be able to display.
