Regarding Employee Id

hrmenaka
Hello Sir/ Mam,
I need a suggestion regarding Employee Id. As i am workinf in a Pvt Company having strength of 1500 employees all over India.
Every employee got their unique Emp Id but when an employee left the job then i used his Emp Id for new Joinees. But i sure that the same Emp Id do not used by two active employees. So kindly suggest can we repeat the employee Id for the different employees.

I suggest having unique ID for each employee.
On retirement, dismissal or exit in any manner, the same number should not reused.
You should run a check to see that no active employees have same ID.
In the armed forces, they give service number to their personnel and that number is unique and on exit, the same number is never reused.
I think that is a good idea which should be implemented.

HRMenaka: You cannot reuse an Employee ID since they 'are' unique employee ids. Reusing an Emp ID will lead to issues with employee records. The recommended strategy for employee ID generation is LocationUniqueCode/EstablishmentCode/EmployeeCode - for example: BOM(which is Bombay location)/ 1 (Which is the establishment, in this case 1 = Nariman Point) / 00001 (which is the employee code, since you have 1500 [4 numberals currently] employees so adding on another numeral will ensure the numerals lasts longer)
Hope this helps.

Dear Menaka,
When you say "Employee Id", do you mean to say "Employee Number"?
If the reply to the above question is "yes" then it appears that you have taken leaf out of administration of telecom companies that provide the mobile services. These companies allot the number to a new subscriber that was surrendered by earlier subscriber. They have to do this per force as they run short of number. But then why you were running short of numbers? You could have allotted new numbers as and when new employee joined in.
By recycling employee number, now you could have a situation where there could be two or more ex-employees with the same employee number. While it will not impact your day-to-day administration, by chance, if someone were to retrieve records, he/she could face problem(s).
Thanks,

Repeating the codes will also be a problems with ERP systems like SAP. Do not do it.
