Seeking Real Examples of Functional Competencies in Manufacturing: Can You Help?

Simta Kapoor
Competency Mapping in Manufacturing Industry

I am working with a manufacturing industry on a Competency Mapping project for all employees (Executives and above) across various departments such as R&D, Production, Sales & Marketing, Maintenance, Plant Engineering & Services, PPC, Stores, Finance, Excise, Logistics, Materials/Purchase, Supply Chain Management, Business Planning & Strategy, and Quality.

Can anyone share examples of the functional competencies applicable to the above-mentioned departments? It would be a great help to me.

Thanks.

Dear Simta, What is your designation? How many years of service do you have? What is your finished product? You could have given a little more information.

Competencies and Performance Measures

Competencies are derived from the measures of performance. Therefore, the first question is: have the measures of performance been decided? There is a risk of deciding competencies without deciding the measures of performance. What if employees score well on competencies but are unable to meet the measures?

Secondly, what you are asking is not general or behavioral competencies. You are asking for "functional" competencies. To draw a list of the functional competencies, one needs to have knowledge of the function. How can anyone have knowledge of all the departments that you have mentioned?

One may download something from omnipresent Google. Nevertheless, one needs to modify the downloaded content. How many persons have the capability to filter the content according to the requirement? If I give you a list of the costs that determine the Supply Chain efficiency, will you be able to derive the competencies required for the Head of Supply Chain?

In view of this, I feel that you need to take a re-look at your approach. HR has a magnetic pull towards jargon called "Competency Mapping" or "Balanced Scorecard," etc. Nevertheless, there are cases wherein the jargon did not improve the financial ratios mentioned on the balance sheet. I request you to keep this factor in mind also.

Thanks,
