Good Day Seniors!
This post is in regards to how do I step into the HR Field, infact I have done Masters in HRD, 2012, Presently working with a shipping company since 1.5 years into operations. Please let me know what topics should i prepare as to be interviewed for a HR genaralist profile. I am even aware of the fact that to bag a generalist profile wont be a cake walk. But atleast if i can be guided on what areas do i need to focus, that would be of great help. To give more insights of my experience was even into Recruitment for more than a year earlier, but as I always wanted to be into Core HR still am hunting for the same.
Awaiting for your valuable inputs!

Dear Cupkin,
For taking decision easily, first you need to list out the options that you have at hand. These are as below:
a) Continue in existing job and grow into ops of shipping company. Nothing wrong in this option. Indian economy is growing and shipping companies are bound to grow.
b) Get into recruitment. This may give you foothold into HR, however, if exercise this option, you will have to abandon 1.5 years of experience in Ops of shipping.
c) Search a new job in HR Generalist profile.
d) Try to become HR Generalist in the existing shipping company.
From my point of view, you should exercise option (a).
Thanks,

Dear Dinesh,
Thankyou for your advise, it seems i should continue here rather being more inclined towards core HR.
But somewhere down the line it stays in my head that I should be into HR, may b because of qualification and even my fellow Batch mates of which few are in core HR Now :(.
Thanks & Best Regards,

Dear Sneha,

Nothing wrong per se if you work in operations with qualification in HR. After all be it in shipping company or any other service company or in factory, it is Ops that calls the shots and not HR! I have seen Purchase managers doing exceedingly well even with qualification as MBA (HR).

Being in Ops improves your chances of becoming CEO. Hardly any HR becomes CEO.

Please remember your college days. Have you not told that "I joined HR because HR is people function". Now it is time to give the output by getting the work done from and by the people. Your leadership skills are tested more in Ops than HR.

To improve your career in shipping, you may do various courses related to Dangerous Goods (DG), fire and safety or marine Ops. This will lend credibility to your job.

Are you good in Maths? If yes, then use analytical tools to solve the Ops related problems. This will enhance your prestige.

All the best!
