Dear Anjali, First and foremost, I commend you from the bottom of my heart for deciding to start an old age home. You could be doing business; however, it is within the framework of service.
Research and Networking
I recommend you find out from Google where the old age homes are available in Mumbai. Visit these homes and find out what legal formalities are required. Meet the owners and find out what other challenges they face. Few of them may not share information with you readily; however, you should be able to crack 1-2 hard nuts and get the requisite information!
Staff Training and Medical Requirements
Legal requirements aside, you need to train your staff in handling infirm old persons as well. You need to have 1-2 medical attendants whose specialization is geriatrics. Otherwise, train all the housekeeping and kitchen staff on geriatrics.
Kitchen and Nutrition
The kitchen is attached to every old age home. Therefore, kitchen staff need to be trained on hygiene, sanitation, and pest control. Secondly, their meals cannot be normal meals but food items need to be extra soft.
Psychological Support
Last but not least, meet with a psychologist as well. Old people have a rock-hard attitude, and dealing with them is a challenge. Therefore, a psychologist's advice right at the beginning is always good.
All the best!
Regards, Dinesh Divekar
