Is a 3-Day Workweek with 11-Hour Days Feasible in India? Share Your Thoughts!

Please give me your opinions regarding the article (in Tribune dated 6th August) on the 3-day working week. It's about working 11 hours per day and having 4 days off. This trend is applicable in some countries. Can it be applicable in India? What will be its pros and cons?

It will reduce the effectiveness of employees as their productivity decreases with each hour. It will not be effective in India, where employees often take 2 hours to commute in metro cities and have many family responsibilities compared to employees in foreign countries.

In a developing country like India, I believe that a 3-day work week is not a practical idea. Perhaps in more advanced countries, a 3 or 4-day work week is feasible. However, we, as Indians, really need to put in a lot of effort to drive our economy forward before the government can even consider implementing a mandatory 5-day work week for everyone.

Efficiency in Indian Work Culture

Indian companies prefer 11 hours a day - 6 days a week, don't they? Companies need training and consultation for efficiency. If one cog in the machine delays execution, they need to be identified and fixed. Reducing the time people spend waiting for the execution of various parts of the project is more important than reducing the number of working hours. When efficiency rises, they will be working fewer and far more productive hours.

It is not at all possible in India, and I hope we should not dream of it. If anyone tries to implement it, they will definitely face the impact.

I am in agreement with the opinions conveyed above. Incidentally, let me state that in 1979, two proposals were put forth by the Government of India concerning 24x7 working days (with staggered weekly day of rest) and a five-day working week. The opinion was strongly against the former and in favor of the latter. The idea of a three-day week for developing countries seems to be merely a figment of imagination and not practical. This concept has not been implemented in developing countries either.
