Mumbai Police Crackdown on Illegal Bangladeshi Immigrants

The special branch of the Mumbai police tightened its noose around Bangladeshi immigrants who are illegally residing in the city and arrested 252 individuals after raids in Thane rural and Navi Mumbai in the first week of December 2012. They have arrested a total of 1,308 immigrants this year.

Out of the 252 arrested, 56 were women, 64 were children, and the remaining were men, a majority of whom work at construction sites. The police have not spared the persons who hire these immigrants as well and have booked 28 contractors this year.

“Any person found hiring Bangladeshis for either domestic or commercial purposes will be booked,” said Sanjay Shintre, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Branch-1.

Recently, the Mumbai Police Department has issued notices to many construction sites and security agencies. According to this, if any Bangladeshi is found working, the employer will be booked under the Foreigner Act, 1946, and under the Foreigners (Report to Police) Order 1971.

This is for your information and to report to the police if you find any Bangladeshi working with you. You need to maintain a record of each person employed by you, including their identity and address proof, etc.

Please find a copy of the notices issued by the Mumbai Police to many construction sites and security agencies for your information and necessary action. According to the notices, construction and security employers are required to submit details of contractors/subcontractors and their laborers to the Mumbai Police.

In the construction industry, we cannot obtain identity proof or address proof from all the workers being engaged. If we start asking for the same, we will not get adequate manpower to complete our project.
