Incident Alert: The Dangers of Incense Sticks in Flammable Areas

Even a small bud from an incense stick (Joss stick/Agarbatti) can lead to disaster. Please find a fatal accident report as received, and we hope this should not occur at our sites.

A person met with an accident and succumbed to death. On the day of the incident, the victim was engaged in transferring thinner from a drum to a small container. After the transfer, he started mixing the thinner with base material in a container. During the process, a bud from an incense stick (Joss stick/Agarbatti), which was fixed just above, dropped into the thinner container and caused an intense fire, resulting in burn injuries to the victim. The victim was immediately shifted to the hospital, but after spending 3 weeks there, he was not able to recover and lost his life.

Learnings to Avoid Such Incidents in the Future

For current storage practices with regards to flammable materials:

1. Flammable materials should not be stored inside offices; they should be stored at a designated location after taking adequate precautions.

2. The usage of matchsticks/incense sticks/Joss sticks shouldn't be allowed at flammable material storage areas.

3. It is recommended to implement the effective display of MSDS/providing precautions (do's & don'ts) in both English/local language at flammable storage areas.

Thank you for sharing the findings of a fire accident. We can also advise the factories/stocking yard in charge to use fire-resistant switches and electrical fittings in their storage yards and in the places where flammable materials are stored. Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Thank you.
