Understanding Dee Shackles: How to Calculate SWL and Differences in Grades

I am looking for some information about Dee shackles. Is there any formula or thumb rule to calculate the SWL of the same? I have seen some different grades of Dee shackles. What are the differences between those grades?

You are right. In the market, there are many grades of D-shackles available. D-shackle grades are differentiated by IS standards, tolerance, etc. I am not sure as I don't have much exposure to D-shackle grades and the differences between those grades. I will discuss with some experts and provide you with the information as soon as I can.

As per my knowledge, there is no such thumb rule to calculate the SWL of Dee Shackles. In all the Dee Shackles, SWL is clearly marked. Therefore, you can select the appropriate one based on this information.

Thank you for the post. I probably have the IS standard for this. I shall post the IS Standard Number by Tuesday. However, as correctly stated by Dipil, the SWL is marked on the shackle. Thank you, Dipil, for the ppt.

SWL Chart for Dee Shackle

As per my understanding from the IS 6132 chart you shared, the grade must be available from the manufacturer. We need to ask them whenever we buy such items. I have never seen any grades written on Dee or Bow Shackles. Is the IS 6132 standard only two pages?

You're exactly right. In our projects, whenever we offer work to a subcontractor, our contract clearly states they need to submit the required documents at least 14 days prior to commencing work. It's mandatory. My understanding of our work culture is that they also need to submit the required documents. If yes, they should submit a test certificate for Dee Shackles. You can get all the required information; it's clearly addressed on all test certificates (see the attached extracted test certificate).

Just ask them to submit test certificates. If they don't have it, you can get it from the manufacturer, but you will need the Serial # and manufacturer details (I know it's very easy to say but very hard to implement, especially in our culture).

As long as the IS standard doesn't have copyrighted material, no one can do anything. This applies not only to IS standards but to all materials.
