Transitioning from IT to Manufacturing: Growth Prospects and Challenges

I am an HR generalist with 2.9 years of experience. Now, I have an opportunity to work with the manufacturing industry where I will be dealing with 80% labor and 20% staff. I want to understand the growth prospects in the manufacturing industry, and I am concerned about not losing my skills in this new environment. Currently, I am working in the IT industry. Can you guide me on what I should do? If so, what are the key challenges in this industry?

You are at the right place if you want to learn most of the HR things. Working with manufacturing industries will sharpen your skills. Most of the challenges you will face in these industries are:

1. You have to understand the psychology of labor, which will help you understand their behavior.
2. You have to cope with their problems.
3. Most of the time, these industries have lots of politics, and you have to deal with it.
4. You have to invent new trainings for the labor as they are mostly unskilled.
5. Again, you have to invent new programs for industrial relations.

You will also have to do much more. If you are ready to learn and ready to face challenges, then only...

I have worked in a manufacturing company where you will find very few and easy recruitment processes, with no such formal or straightforward working procedures. There, you will only find the full application of labor laws, and all acts will be followed diligently, making you an expert in legal compliance, which is crucial in HR. So, you must join it soon.
