Recent History of School-Related Accidents in Tamil Nadu

Please find below the recent history of accidents related to schools in Tamil Nadu. After every accident, there will be a discussion regarding rules and regulations for some time. However, eventually, everyone forgets until the next accident occurs.

1. 16th July 2004: A fire gutted a school in Kumbakonam. The school was situated in a densely populated area with three floors. Eighty-three children lost their lives.

2. 4th December 2009: A school van slipped off the road and plunged into a 15-foot deep pond at Katripullam village. The driver was using a mobile phone while driving the van. Nine children and one teacher died.

3. 8th November 2011: A school van overturned due to driver negligence at Kokkumedu. Twenty children sustained serious injuries.

4. 9th April 2012: A school van overturned due to overspeeding at Ulundurpet. One UKG student was killed, and 25 others were injured.

5. 16th July 2012: An auto-rickshaw overturned due to driver negligence at Padiyur. A 12-year-old girl lost her life, and nine other students were injured.

6. 25th July 2012: A six-year-old girl was run over by a rear wheel of her school bus after she slipped through a hole on the floor of the school bus at Mudichur.

Yesterday, I forwarded the news along with the High Court Order on School Safety to our School's Principal, with a copy sent to all our senior school management representatives. It is only valuable when somebody wants to learn. There is a lot of news available regarding this kind of incident, but so far, no action from the government. The government needs to take a big step against it, but due to corruption, it is not possible.

Instead of playing the blame-game like politicians, let us start spreading safety awareness in our locality. I feel it is our responsibility to create safety awareness in the schools available in our locality. So I expect you to involve yourself and take some initiative from your side.

I am attaching the Word file that I have converted from a PDF file and made it into 8 pages instead of 36 pages. You can go for back-to-back printouts and hand them over to the nearby schools. Furthermore, provide safety and fire lectures to those schools on their premises with a prior appointment.

Please do not go alone. Take at least 2 more people along with you so that the school will not avoid you.

Dear All, incidents in schools are not very rare in our country. Have a look at the incident below, which occurred in one of the schools in UP yesterday, killing six innocent children.

The Indian Government really needs to do something to enforce the rules made.

It is very unfortunate that the child was killed. My sincere prayers go out to the family, giving them the strength to bear the passing of their daughter. Let us, as parents, take on the responsibility of preventing such accidents by regularly talking to our children, teaching them to be aware of any discrepancies, and taking turns to inspect the bus or van for any signs of poor maintenance or damage. If necessary, we should be prepared to switch from one vehicle to another. Let us each do our part and not place blame on the government or school authorities, as our children are precious to us.

Fortunately, school management, the transport in charge, and vehicle inspectors are all behind bars. The RTO has been suspended, and every school is busy replacing or repairing old vehicles. Only in Tamil Nadu can such swift actions be expected, not in other states. Hopefully, other states will learn a lesson from this tragedy and the subsequent actions taken.

The safety of kids is the responsibility of everyone, including their parents. Safety starts at home itself. Please find attached the picture, clearly showing the failure of parental responsibility. I don't understand how parents allow kids to ride in such a vehicle.
