Transitioning from NGO Work to HR: Can My Experience Land Me a Corporate Job?

Hi All, I have just now registered on this site, so first I would like to introduce myself. I am Amrita. I have been associated with NGOs (a non-profit organization that works in the community for causes like education, health, women empowerment, entrepreneurship, etc.) for approximately 3 years with a degree in "Human Development." You might have heard of this degree for the first time, so I would like to elaborate a bit about it.

About Human Development

Human Development is a course where we learn about the lifespan of an individual, child and human development theories, counseling, psychological theories, multicultural perspectives of development, and similar courses. This subject gives us a perspective to understand how different enduring experiences, past and changing environments affect the life of an individual.

In my 3 years of career, I have been dealing with people from varied backgrounds like community people, medical officials, government people, program officers, country directors, etc. Because of this, I think I have gained skills in managing people. I am a tech-savvy person with sound knowledge of research and training.

Now, due to some reasons, I want to move to HR, and for the same, I am planning to do a PGDHRM course from SIBM, mostly. Right now, I am planning to fetch an entry/mid-level HR job to get hands-on experience while getting a diploma certification.

Seeking Suggestions

Friends, I need your suggestions. Do you think that with the kind of experience I have, I would be able to get a job in any corporate at this point in time? Is there any company that entertains such people without any degree and experience in HR? Can you suggest any site where I can search for HR jobs?

Any kind of help would be great.

First, I would like to thank you for joining us, and we are grateful to have you here. I am well aware of your degree and profession, and I appreciate the work and understanding you have earned. I respect your decision to move into CORE HR.

Here is one thing I want to let you know: you must pursue a PGDHRM, which will give you an option to enter the corporate world as required. We all know that HR work and the style of the corporate sector are totally different from others. The base can remain the same, but the style of work and atmosphere/culture creates a big difference today. Yes, it is acceptable that you don't have work experience in the functions of Human Resources. So far, the details about you and your experience that you have shared with us indicate that you have no experience with HR functions like Wages & Compensation (Salary, ESIC, EPF, etc.), T&D, and others. Therefore, it is really important for you to earn this basic knowledge to make a good start.

PGDHRM will give you the basic knowledge and boost your confidence, but along with your studies, you have to work hard to gain knowledge of HR functions, Labour Law Acts and rules, and all other conditions.

Steps to Enhance Your HR Knowledge

“The more time you spend here, the more chances you will get to learn” because this is the place where we discuss our professional life and issues daily. A number of members, including very senior professionals, contribute with their respective and esteemed experience.

- Start reading posts/threads about ESIC & EPF and others.
- Spend time on this platform and earn as much knowledge as you can about it.
- Make your own material and data backup of the documents (can be downloaded from CiteHR) so that you can learn anytime.
- Practice at home.
- Share your questions with us, whatever you discover during your study, and we'll help you out.
