Seeking Guidance: Best Career Path for My Brother in Merchant Navy or Post-BSc Options?

Good Day Alcon, I would like to request kind suggestions and advice on the following.

Program Options for My Brother

I am interested in enrolling my brother in one of the following programs based on his marks in 12th Standard. Currently, he has taken the final year exam of BSc Statistics.

Merchant Navy Options

According to his marks in 12th Standard, he is eligible for the following courses:
- Pre-Sea General Purpose Ratings (25 weeks)
- Maritime Catering Technology & Hotel Management (2 years)

Please advise on which option would provide better job opportunities in the future.

Post-BSc Choices

Additionally, what would be the best choice for him after BSc? He is not interested in MSc but is interested in pursuing an MBA or joining the Navy.

I am finding it difficult to make a decision, so your advice would be highly appreciated.

After completing graduation, what is the logic of doing a course whose qualification requirement is Class XII? I do not understand. Your brother should pursue a course whose qualification requirement is graduation.

I recommend he pursue an MBA (Operations). His knowledge of Statistics will be of immense use to him.

After an MBA (Operations), one of the best career paths for him is to get into Supply Chain Management (SCM). SCM requires a lot of calculations, and with his background in Statistics, he should not have any problem in SCM.

Supply chain is growing worldwide, and India is no exception. Therefore, the sky is the limit for growth in this field.

I conduct training programs in the field of Purchase and Inventory Management. My observation is that non-engineers do not succeed much in this field because of their poor mathematical skills. Your brother may check the website of the Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM) and consider the SCM course.

Another course to consider is Operations Research (OR). This is quite an established field. Your brother can check the website of the Operations Research Society of India. With a course in OR, your brother can enter IT, Banking, Retail, Manufacturing, SCM, etc. Knowledge of OR will be beneficial everywhere. In India, OR techniques are not widely used.

Check what his likes and dislikes are and let him choose the right course. However, the courses you mentioned in your post will under-utilize his talent, and there will be no use in doing a BSc (Statistics).

If he is interested in joining the Navy, what about the Air Force? For a flying pilot, the earlier requirement was BSc (Maths/Stats). I don't know what the current requirement is.

Thank you for the prompt response, Mr. Dinesh. I agree with your response, and in fact, it is correct that there is no use of a BSc if he joins a higher secondary course. Well, an MBA is also on my mind, but now, hopefully, I will fix it and advise him to pursue an MBA in operations. Your hint also got me thinking about a Pilot course. You have awakened me with that suggestion.
