Is It Possible to Take a 6-Month Leave for Exam Prep in a Government PSU?

Hi, I am working in a government PSU. I have just completed my probation period. Before joining, I was studying for my post-graduation course, completed the duration of training, but could not take the final exams. Now, I want to take extraordinary leave for 6 months to prepare for the exams. Is it feasible or permissible to take such kind of leave? Our company manuals do not mention anything about extraordinary leave.

Please approach your HR Department. They can guide you in this aspect. Normally, extraordinary leave is given for participation as a player in international sports events or any special occasion. Please check with your HR Department and inquire about the study leave options.

All the best.

Like S. Bhaskar mentioned, check with your HR/Personnel department. Further to what he mentioned, I think you also need to be practical and realistic. Why do you need 6 months of leave just for exams? How many days would the exams last—maybe at most a couple of weeks? Even preparation can be done in parallel while you are on duty—in the evenings/nights. Unless you put in the maximum effort within the permissible circumstances, there's no way you can convince anyone about the reason for your request for leave. By projecting illogical or inaccurate timeframes, you are only allowing yourself to be targeted for possible misuse of any granted leave.

Sabbatical Leave Availability

Generally, sabbatical leave is available only after 5 years of work. However, it depends on HR and your manager. If you are relatively new, chances are it will be disallowed.

Generally, Extraordinary Leave is provided or granted to an employee when there are no other alternative leaves in credit for the employee, or when the employee has availed a significant number of days off without any valid reason. EOL is at the discretionary power of the granting authority.

I hope I have clarified your doubt to some extent.
