Pregnancy Discrimination Laws in India

Is there any law in India for pregnancy discrimination at the workplace? I am highly harassed since they have come to know about my pregnancy.

Harassment of Pregnant Women in the Workplace

Harassing pregnant women in the workplace is against the basic tenets of the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961. Refer to the Maternity Benefit Act for more details.

Thank you.

This is unacceptable from a responsible employer. There are laws protecting against discrimination in the workplace. You, being pregnant, will be a sensitive issue in the eyes of the law.

I would advise you to take a break from work, as mental torture and harassment at this stage of your life will affect not only you but also the baby.

Just think, your current employer is not fortunate enough to have your services.

All the best!

Even though it is not applicable to India, you can take guidance from these threads on the privileges you can claim and the facilities you can demand. You can get some clues from these threads because they have already been introduced in India under the names of Liberalisation, Privatisation, and Globalisation. However, our country will always follow the Maternity Benefit Act, 1961, and not others.

Kindly make your query specific. Why the harassment? What is the harassment? Who is the person? From when has the harassment been occurring? What steps have you taken? Have you escalated this to top management? What has been the outcome? If you can provide detailed information, it would be easier for members to offer suggestions. Please look into it.
