How to Handle Unrelated Tasks During Notice Period and Possibly Reduce It?

Hi, I have resigned from my current employer due to personal reasons. I have to serve a notice period of 3 months. I have already completed 2 months. Now they have assigned a new task that is not related to my technology and told me to complete it before leaving. I have explained that it is not within my expertise and I have never worked on it before. Despite this, my manager is insisting that I complete the task.

Please advise me on how to handle this situation and also on how to potentially reduce the notice period.

Since you have completed your 2-month notice period, I would suggest you complete 1 more month of your notice period. Instead of wasting your time in your notice period, the company must have thought to utilize your skills and knowledge and keep you busy. Think of it in this way; this might add additional value to your career.

Yes, what you said looks correct. I am an Oracle DBA, but they are asking me to work on Development which is irrelevant. Is there any possibility they may delay in relieving me? Can you guide me on how to handle this? I am ready to pay for the remaining 1-month notice, but they are not ready to accept it. Moreover, I don't have any other commitments like KT, handover, etc.

With just a month left in the company and unfamiliar work allotted, it's not a favorable situation for anyone. Having said that, no matter where we go, there is something called Employee Referral Check which will be critical when joining a company. If you don't try to at least complete some part of the work and show some effort, your manager might make it tough for you while leaving and give some feedback which might be encouraging for the next company.

Involve Your Manager

The best way out is to involve your manager in your work. Give updates to him on the work progress without him/her asking for it and where you are getting stuck and might need help. As the days pass, they will realize you are trying; you might not necessarily finish the work but you did take it up. You lose nothing, but gain confidence, trust, and goodwill while leaving the company. All the best.

If you think that the task is way above your limitations and the management is harassing you into it, please surrender one month's notice pay and leave the organization. Write a letter (hard copy) to the management about your intention of leaving the organization and enclose a cheque for one month's notice pay. Please ask them to issue an experience letter and a relieving letter as well. Mark a copy of this letter to your Local Labour Commissioner with a copy of the cheque. Retain a copy of all for your reference as well. You should receive your dues easily.

Dear Ramana, it is a very wrong practice not to serve the notice period. The management should arrange for someone to take over your responsibilities to ensure the smooth running of the business. Failing to serve the notice period disrupts operations, which is not ideal. Even in cases of sudden problems preventing notice period completion, it is important to submit a proper resignation with a request to waive the notice period.

Regarding Your PF Withdrawal

As PF is your right, I can guide you on how to proceed. You should correctly fill out forms 19 and 10C and submit them directly to the PF office. The rest will be taken care of by them.
