Understanding Zone Classifications in Minimum Wages Act: Which Areas Fall Under Zones 1, 2, and 3?

I have gone through many documents on the web but could not find the answer. I just want to know about the ZONE Classification.

What areas shall come under Zone 1, and similarly, under Zones 2 and 3?

I too had the same query. After searching over the net, I have found the following classification. I hope this is correct.

"Zones in Maharashtra
The state has been classified into groups A, B, C, D, and D+ according to industrial development.

- Group A comprises the developed areas, namely the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR).
- Group B comprises the areas where some development has taken place.
- Group C comprises the areas which are less developed than those in Group B.
- Group D comprises the lesser-developed areas of the State not covered under Group A/Group B/Group C.
- Group D+ comprises those least developed areas not covered under Group A/Group B/Group C/Group D."

Zones in Maharashtra as Classified by the Ministry of Labor

Zone I - Comprises the area falling within the limits of all 'A' and 'B' class Municipal Corporations.

Zone II - Comprises the areas falling within the limits of all 'C' and 'D' class Municipal Corporations, 'A' class Municipal Councils, and Cantonment areas.

Zone III - Comprises all other areas in the state that are not included in Zone I and Zone II.

I have one question regarding minimum wages and allowances. If two industries of similar nature, one under the central government and one under the state government, what will be the wage rates? Will they be the same for both or different?

Zone Classification in Gujarat

In Gujarat, Zone I comprises the Municipal Corporation Limits of Ahmedabad, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Rajkot, Baroda, Surat, and Bhavnagar. Zone II includes the remaining areas in the State of Gujarat. However, I am unsure about what Zone III entails.

Dear all,

Municipal corporations and municipalities are two categories. Further, they are subdivided into A, B, C, and D, based on the population in the particular city. The same applies to Municipality-NAGAR PAISHAD.

Zone I & II are the areas under metro and other cities, for example, Pune. However, industries that fall under MIDC, Gram Panchayat, and Nagar Parishad are categorized under Zone III.

Which municipal corporation falls into which class is decided by the respective state governments. Generally, it is based on the city's population.

Municipal corporations covered under Zone I are corporations having the mayor as the chief of elected members. For example, Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Aurangabad, Nashik, Nagpur.

Zone II municipal corporations are those other than the ones mentioned above, and the area within 10 km of the corporations in Zone I.

Zone III includes areas apart from Zone I and Zone II.

These specifications are only applicable to the Maharashtra state. Gujarat has only two zones as mentioned by Mr. Bhaskar.

Zone A: Corporations include Chennai, Coimbatore, Erode, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Tiruppur, Tuticorin, and Vellore.

Zone B: All other municipalities.

Zone C: Townships, Town Panchayats, Cantonment, and Village Panchayats.

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh State Zones Description

Zone-I: All Corporations and Special Grade Municipalities (and 8 KM peripheral areas of the places)

Zone-II: Grade-I and Grade-II Municipalities (and 6 KM peripheral areas of the Places)

Zone-III: Grade-III Municipalities and Major Panchayats.

Zone-IV: Rest of the areas in the State.

To sum up all the above. (Correct me if I am wrong)

All Metro Cities and their Corporations fall in Zone I. All Municipal Corporations, which are in non-metro cities, are in Zone II. All the Gram Panchayats and Zila Parishads are in Zone III.

Kindly let me know the Zone 1, Zone 2, and Zone 3 cities in Karnataka as per the Minimum Wages Act.
