Why Using a Common Language in Forums Matters: A Call for Understanding and Inclusivity

Dear Friends,

Yesterday onwards, there have been some discussions going on in everyone's mind. Some members' threads have been completely deleted, and some are complaining that their number of replies/threads/comments has decreased. What is the reason? Can anyone analyze the same?

We came to know from a reply by a member named Roshni that all the vernacular language threads and comments have been removed by the Administrators of CiteHR. Whatever the Administrators are saying is 100% correct. It is not a good practice to discuss in our mother tongue while other language members are present in the forum.

If you want to quote something in your language, then you have the moral responsibility to explain the same in the common language of this forum; otherwise, it may create the feeling among other forum members that you are suppressing or avoiding them. Here, you can have fun only in the HR Humour section. I agree too.

However, this understanding should be shared by all members. I believe you can also understand the feelings of the Administrators. We are having high-level discussions on all topics, but if we cannot have the basic courtesy of discussing them in a common language, our high-level effective discussions will be futile.

Please try to understand, HRites. Please improve yourselves and avoid sentimental feelings, friends. Raise your level to international standards and move beyond your village, district, state, area, country, and reach the universal level, friends. Think positively and take it as a challenge to elevate yourselves to the mark.

Dear Dinesh,

Whenever you are in India, you can tell that yours is a common language (except Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, etc.). Whenever you are in your state, then your language is the common language. Whenever you are planning to raise yourself up to the international level, obviously you must acquaint yourself with the common language. We are not specifying the language for India; we are discussing for the entire world.

If a Russian is in his country, he can have all the conversation in the Russian language, and they are technically rich in their language. But whenever they are entering the world market, they are submitting their literature only in English. In fact, that country is not required to use English as all Russians are literate in the Russian language. But if you want to contact me, you have to use English only as I don't know Hindi, and you cannot understand Tamil.

So, think, Mr. Dinesh, before passing any resolutions in favor of or against any issues.

Discussion on Language Use in the Forum

If 40% of Indians don't know Hindi, they won't log on to the English forum. I am sure the members of Citehr.com are well-educated and can reply or react in English, which is a universal language. Don't blame me for anything.

I hope my version is very clear in this aspect. Here, I would like to explain that this forum is being used by HR professionals from around the world. Therefore, one must elevate themselves to meet the standard.

Three Things That Can Be Compared with Human Lives

First - Honey Bee: It lives in a good place, eats, and gives us honey.

Second - Fly: It lives in all kinds of places, both good and bad. It sits on sweet fruits, food, and even in undesirable locations like waste and gutters.

Third - Worm: It is born in drainage or gutters, lives there, and eventually dies there.

In this forum, we expect everyone to embody the standard of a honey bee and not the other forms mentioned.

One important thing to remember is that our humor should not harm or hurt others' feelings.

It's a forum to discuss our thoughts, ideas, feelings, experiences, problems, solutions, situations, etc. All the above and more can be explained in English, but at times, when providing solutions, suggestions, queries, thoughts, etc., we try to put them in Hindi so that the exact meaning can be explained. It doesn't mean that we cannot do it in English, but that a Hindi or desi touch is required from time to time to get a detailed analysis.

So, don't be so rude against Hindi or any other language.

Language Use on CiteHR

Please use a language that everyone can understand. If you wish to post a message in a language other than English, kindly provide a translation in English as well. For the benefit of those who prefer communication in Hindi, I will attempt to translate the above request into Hindi.

Krupaya CiteHr mein Angrezi bhasha mein likhiye, kyonki yeh ek antarrashtriya manch hai. Agar aap Hindi ya kisi aur bhasha mein likhna chahte hain toh uss sandesh ka Angrezi mein anuvad bhi dijiye. Aapne jo likha hai, Hindi ya kisi aur bhasha mein, uska Angrezi mein anuvad dijiye.

Dear Mr. CEO Sanju, here, we are not suggesting that you should refrain from expressing your feelings or communicating in Hindi. If you choose to explain in Hindi, please provide an English translation. If a complete translation is not feasible, at least offer a brief idea to aid in understanding the communication.

Avoiding Language and Regional Sentiments

Why unnecessarily introduce language, regional, or communal sentiments into the forum? This can be observed right from the beginning, as indicated below:

Let me clarify, I am not creating any regional bias here. Can someone confirm if the official language to be used in this forum is ENGLISH? Is it mentioned in the terms and conditions of the forum? If yes, please send me the path so that I can update myself and proceed according to the forum norms. If not, then why has all this misunderstanding been created? Please reply.

Addressing Concerns About Language Use on the Forum

Dear Boss, I agree with you. I am addressing the people who designed this site, the Moderators. They don't have the right to say that people should not use Hindi. However, if they are deleting someone's post, they should inform him/her. I agree, but even if they inform, we do not know what is going on behind the scenes. What happened has happened; we can't bring that back. This forum is especially made for HR professionals, and all of us know about it.

I have something to say to some people. Please do not show over-enthusiasm by creating a scene to support others. I have noticed that some people are even telling newcomers who join the site that this site has just faced a problem. Regardless, you are welcome. Is this the right way to welcome a fresher? It is not fair. The person who posted this will understand what I am saying. I am asking right from the start, are you giving a bad opinion about this site? Why have many people not gained knowledge through this platform in the past or even now? Once you said you would surely get a reply, so please be patient until you receive an answer. Do not say Cite HR is not meant for Indians just to increase the number of threads. Everyone gathers here to share knowledge, not for arguments. There is no competition or debate going on here. In life, there are many things to achieve, and Cite HR alone is not the whole world. If you post good threads, it is truly appreciable. One day, your hard work will be valued. It is time to move on.

There is some basic etiquette that we have to follow in an open forum or any society where people speak different languages. This cannot be specified in the terms and conditions of any forum. Here, I am requesting all of you to use English as the common language. If you mention anything in a vernacular language, please provide the meaning in English as well. That's all I wanted to say.

Hi friends, I have been reading all your conversations. I hope CiteHR is a common site that has its own ethics and morale too. Since we have been joining to share our suggestions and gain knowledge (not to fight), it's not for the honeybee nor for the gutter. It's not for the Englishman nor the Indian. These discussions are extended throughout the world, so there is a need to maintain a medium that the whole world can understand. I don't know what industry you guys are in, but when you take your company transnationally where foreigners are present, you have to follow a common medium, English. That's what Mr. Bhaskar is trying to say. Therefore, I request you to cooperate and help make this forum shine.

Thank you, Mr. Vijay Ramasamy, for your valuable comments. We should not think and take every happening in a personalized way. If we do so, then only we will get hurt. As per the new policy issued to the Moderators by the Administrators or as per the existing policy, the moderators are forced to delete some unwanted threads not related to HR subjects and published in the Vernacular Language.

For this, some people seem to be arguing (not discussing) that Indian Traditional Indian/English lovers/Non-English speakers do not look nice and are unquotable. Even if they want to mention the saying in the Vernacular Language, they can give a meaning close to it, which will also be accepted as forum members should understand what it could be.

I also wish to add some points to this valuable post. I think what the moderators have done is right. It doesn't mean that I'm hurting persons who are talking or conversing in Hindi. I think if we use a common language, it will be easy for all CiteHR members to accept and understand the matters well. If some important discussions are going on in regional languages, some people may not understand.

I think as an international forum, it will be useful when we communicate our thoughts and knowledge in English. If I hurt somebody's feelings, I'm sorry.

Dear Ms. Dharani, I too agree it is not possible to translate the language specials and regional specials (words in existence) into other languages. However, members can try to inform other members about the wide range of meanings, not just the exact meaning. Here, in this forum, I hope we are only discussing our stance and sharing our views without intending to hurt anyone. In a healthy atmosphere where everybody understands the exact meaning of words and the intended meaning of concerned members, there should be no hurt feelings on the subject.

Greetings, and please accept my sincere thanks for your valuable comments. As asked by some members, the rule for the usage of the English language is not required. Even though the site belongs to Uttar Pradesh, if some members join from Tamil Nadu (where there is no Hindi at all) and one Russian (where there is no English at all) are entering, we have to select a common language for our use. Demanding some rules is not acceptable. Even in our house, when guests come from other states, we cannot discuss anything in a language the guest cannot understand. If it is so, then what will be the feelings of the guest? This is only basic etiquette, which we are teaching to our 7-year-old children, and some of our members do not know; that is really surprising.

Yes, of course, everybody makes mistakes. If someone says that he never makes any mistakes, we should not believe him because he is a liar or he never does any work. Whoever does some work will obviously make mistakes. But human beings will learn from their mistakes, and they will not repeat the same mistake in the future. The best quality is learning from others' mistakes.

There is a funny wall hanging I have seen somewhere:

Boss, I do not want to commit any mistakes, so do not assign any work to me. We cannot sit idle too.
