Dear Ajivasudev,
Warm welcome to the forum. Let me share my view regarding your case. Nowadays, all the major industries in India are giving high importance to safety. They are doing a good amount of homework before giving a contract to the construction companies.
Contractor Safety Management System
Following are the steps included in Contractor Safety Management System:
1. Contractor Selection
2. Contract Preparation
3. Contract Award
4. Orientation and Training
5. Managing the Work
6. Periodic Evaluation
Your question comes in the first step. For this, any reputed company before selecting a contractor will ask and analyze the data for the last three years. Mainly, they will assess the following:
1. Amount of Insurance Paid during the last three years
2. Incident data of the last three years
3. Any legal cases against the company from the last three years
4. A thorough survey of contractor performance, which mainly includes the following:
- Has the contractor had previous successful performance here or at other companies?
- Does the contractor have qualified, trained, experienced personnel and supervision for all safety aspects of the work?
- Does the contractor have a formal (written) safety program, conduct job safety inspections, and maintain incident investigation logs?
- Is the contractor insured and bonded?
- Does the contractor have sufficient resources (equipment, staff) to complete the work safely?
- Can the contractor adequately monitor subcontractor activity?
- Are their written safety programs credible, comprehensive, and current?
- Can the contractor show evidence that the programs are effective (for example, do they have safety audit records with measurable results)?
- Is there documentation of safety training, as well as appropriate certifications and licensing?
- Are there clearly delineated safety roles and responsibilities for everyone in the contractor organization: management, staff, supervision, workers?
- Workers' knowledge?
- Medical checkups?
- References from previous employers
I think from all the above you will get some idea. It's not so easy to become a reputed company. There must be system-based working; only then can we achieve it. It's not possible when it comes to Individual Working. So, you prepare your action plan with clear objectives and goals where you and your company want to reach after three years. Then, make an action plan to accomplish all these goals.
Remember: All this is possible only with clear will and support from your management. All the best.
Hope this will help you.
