How Can I Showcase Our New Safety Measures to Win More Contracts in Construction?

avdkadakkal
Dear Seniors, I am working with a civil construction company where the HSE department was formed a few weeks ago. In a short time period, we have implemented good safety procedures at all our sites. Now, I want to highlight safety in the market, which will help us achieve more contracts. Please suggest tips on how to highlight my organization's safety.

Strategies to Highlight Safety

- Participate in various safety award competitions.
- Update your company website.
- Ask your HR department to add some lines about your world-class safety culture/infrastructure while publishing any advertisements for recruitments.
- Publish safety achievements in your annual reports and add many more points.

Dear Ajivasudev,

Warm welcome to the forum. Let me share my view regarding your case. Nowadays, all the major industries in India are giving high importance to safety. They are doing a good amount of homework before giving a contract to the construction companies.

Contractor Safety Management System

Following are the steps included in Contractor Safety Management System:

1. Contractor Selection
2. Contract Preparation
3. Contract Award
4. Orientation and Training
5. Managing the Work
6. Periodic Evaluation

Your question comes in the first step. For this, any reputed company before selecting a contractor will ask and analyze the data for the last three years. Mainly, they will assess the following:

1. Amount of Insurance Paid during the last three years
2. Incident data of the last three years
3. Any legal cases against the company from the last three years
4. A thorough survey of contractor performance, which mainly includes the following:

- Has the contractor had previous successful performance here or at other companies?
- Does the contractor have qualified, trained, experienced personnel and supervision for all safety aspects of the work?
- Does the contractor have a formal (written) safety program, conduct job safety inspections, and maintain incident investigation logs?
- Is the contractor insured and bonded?
- Does the contractor have sufficient resources (equipment, staff) to complete the work safely?
- Can the contractor adequately monitor subcontractor activity?
- Are their written safety programs credible, comprehensive, and current?
- Can the contractor show evidence that the programs are effective (for example, do they have safety audit records with measurable results)?
- Is there documentation of safety training, as well as appropriate certifications and licensing?
- Are there clearly delineated safety roles and responsibilities for everyone in the contractor organization: management, staff, supervision, workers?
- Workers' knowledge?
- Medical checkups?
- References from previous employers

I think from all the above you will get some idea. It's not so easy to become a reputed company. There must be system-based working; only then can we achieve it. It's not possible when it comes to Individual Working. So, you prepare your action plan with clear objectives and goals where you and your company want to reach after three years. Then, make an action plan to accomplish all these goals.

Remember: All this is possible only with clear will and support from your management. All the best.

Hope this will help you.

Thank you very much for your advice. As a first step, I'll make a formal Safety Program for my organization. I'll send it to you first for your reference and comments. After that, I'll create a clear action plan to achieve my goals along with my management. I am hoping for your valuable help in the future also.

Warm regards,

OHSAS Certification

Is your company certified by OHSAS? If yes, then your company will automatically be highlighted in the market as OHSAS is the best organization emphasizing HSE procedures.

Firstly, you need to follow the Environmental, Health, and Safety norms in your organization and conduct the risk analysis. After completing the risk analysis, you can get an idea of the requirements and space for further improvements. Please find attached one page of the risk analysis where you can understand the requirements. We conduct risk analysis for all big groups, but we are not sharing the whole report with you due to the confidentiality of the factory/organization's issues.

If you truly need the complete report, we can conduct the risk analysis at your organization, providing you with a comprehensive idea for the next five years plan.

You need to take multiple rounds in a day in proper gear and counsel any person you meet, irrespective of whether they are violating some standard. Even with someone who is doing okay, ask a few questions and tell them that they are doing a good job on safety and that their family must be proud of them. The effect of this is that people get into a habit if somebody keeps asking day in and day out, and there is a lot of peer pressure that builds up.

You also need to ask people to be vigilant about individuals who violate safety norms or adopt shortcuts, as it may be their mistake that causes injury to you. Additionally, you can have a safety day once a week, where even the plant manager joins the workers in the canteen for a word or two and raises a toast over juice or soup, and so on.
