Confused About Salary Deductions: Should They Come from Gross or Basic Pay?

Renu J.
Dear all,

I just received my 1st salary, but I have a small doubt - my joining date was the 5th of January 2011, so my number of working days is 27. They have deducted 4 days' salary from the gross (total) salary, but I think they should have deducted it from the Basic Salary! I might be wrong. I just want all of you to update me with the above discussion.

You have joined at which level - on a contract basis, permanent basis, or daily rate basis.

Once you have joined on 05 Jan 11, it means from 1 to 4 Jan you are not entitled to any salary. Hence, they made payment for 27 days in Jan 2011.

Please never calculate like this. Think big, reach maximum heights. Try to become the head in the future within the same company. Make a habit of saving a portion of your salary. Diversify your investments.

All the best.

With warm regards,

Hello Renu J,

S. Bhaskar's advice regarding savings is worth taking without any hesitation. It can be implemented even if you have to support people at home with your salary— at this stage, it's not 'how much' you save. Just allow the habit to be formed.

There's also another thing that I would suggest— whether to take it or not is up to you. You can also allow the habit of 'Giving' to be formed. It will stand you in good stead as you climb up the corporate ladder. To begin with, you can choose an Orphanage or any such deserving cause— the critical word being 'Deserving'.

The Bible says that one has to 'GIVE' 10 parts (10%) of what he/she earns [why 10% is a long story]— basically giving back to society right from Day 1. The 'satisfaction' one gains while 'giving' far outweighs the satisfaction while 'taking'.

All the Best.

Hi Bhaskar,

Yes, that was a compliment! I'm in my early 20s. I know your advice will be very helpful in my future life. Thank you so much.

@Arunoomen: Thank you so much. I hope you will be guiding me a long way. Thanks once again!

@tajsateesh: I'll definitely try to "give" some amount from my salary for sure.
