Role vs. Designation: Can Someone Explain the Difference?

Hi, can someone please help me get clarity on whether there exists any difference between a role and a designation? Thanks a lot.

Hi Vimee, if I'm not wrong, the difference between role and designation can be outlined like this: While "Recruitment Executive" is a designation, the roles played under this include CV sourcing, telecalling, candidate screening, interviewing, document and background verifying, etc. For an employee in a company, the designation on paper may be singular, but the roles to be performed under it can be multiple. Every role can function as a designation in itself, but not vice versa. I hope this explanation clarifies the distinction between roles and designations.

Designation is for identification purposes. It will be given based on experience. Whereas the role is the exact position of the person with the specific responsibilities they are expected to fulfill. For example, a person may hold the title of HR Manager but may not assume the role of HR Head if there is already a Senior Manager or Assistant General Manager of HR in place who is designated as the HR Head.

Yes, there is a difference between role and designation. For better understanding, let's put it in this way:

Designation = Tag given to an employee through which he is being recognized.
Role = With the given designation, what roles are expected to perform.

Designation examples: JR HR, Sr HR, HR Lead, HR Mgr, HR admin, etc.
Role = The activities which are expected out of the designation.

One way you can say that designation is an identity given, and role is the activity to meet the identity.

For any employee, there should be both a designation and a role for that designation. A designation is used to identify the role of any employee in the organization. This may be true only when there is a clear-cut clarity in the role defined for a designation. So, every designation has a role.

While a designation is a single term that acts as an identifier, a role could be multiple. Therefore, a designation could have multiple roles (activities).

Role: Performing duties and responsibilities as described by the company (e.g., separation officer, who takes care of the release formalities of the resigned employees). There will not be any promotions in the role.

Designation: Where we have promotions in this role like executive, senior executive, assistant manager, manager, etc. So, the separation officer can be designated as any of the above.

"Designation" is the title assigned to a particular role. Once, I was appointed as the Academic Coordinator and English Coordinator at a school. My responsibilities included training teachers in English, personality development, counseling weak students, Vedic maths instruction, calligraphy, and providing soft skills training for both teachers and students.

It is important to note that any role can be assigned by the management even if a specific designation did not exist previously.
