Types of Leaves

There are basically three types of leaves: Casual Leave (CL), Sick Leave (SL), and Earned Leave/Paid Leave (EL/PL). In most organizations, there are 7 SL and 7 CL. EL depends on the leave policy of the organization.

Sir, is there any compulsion to give Sick Leave (SL) and Casual Leave (CL)? If it is compulsory, what is the minimum and maximum number of days we have to give/can give, and does it fall under any rule? Is there any problem if we do not provide SL and CL?

Kindly reply, please.

As per the Kerala Shops and Commercial Establishment Act, employees are entitled to 12 CL (Casual Leave), 12 SL (Sick Leave), and 12 earned leaves, depending on the number of days worked.

Dear Vidhu,

A little correction I would like to make: Leaves are decided as per the act (Company Act/ S&E Act) under which the company is being registered, and the number of leaves varies from state to state. PL is known as Privilege Leave, not Paid Leave. Paid leaves are those granted with payment.

Dear Friend,

As per the Shops and Establishment Act, AP, employees are eligible for three types of leave: SL (Sick Leave), CL (Casual Leave), and PL (Privilege Leave). For an employee who works on the company's payroll, the available leaves are as follows:
1. Casual Leave: 12 days
2. Sick Leave: 12 days
3. Privilege Leave: 15 days. PL is entitled to an employee when he/she completes one year (a minimum of 240 days) of service with the company. Leaves are calculated as per the calendar year, not the financial year.

I suggest you buy the latest AP S&E Act book to have a detailed understanding of the policies regarding the aforementioned types of leaves.

Leave policies differ from factory to factory. If you want more clarification about leave, refer to the Factory Act. It will help you with your doubts.

Dear Manikyam,

CL stands for Casual Leave. It is given based on the company's norms and regulations. In our manufacturing organization, CL is given as 9 days per year on a pro-rata basis depending on the number of days worked by an employee in the previous year. CL lapses at the end of every calendar year.

SL stands for Sick Leave. It is given based on the company's norms and regulations. In our manufacturing organization, SL is provided as 8 days per year on a pro-rata basis depending on the number of days worked by an employee in the previous year. SL can be carried forward if there are any days left for the next calendar year.

PL stands for Privilege Leave. It is also known as EL (Earned Leave) in some companies. PL is given based on the company's norms and regulations. In our manufacturing organization, PL is allocated as 30 days per year on a pro-rata basis depending on the number of days worked by an employee in the previous year. PL exceeding 90 days are encashed in our company. Any PL remaining at the end of the current year is carried forward to the next year.

Remember: All leaves are granted on a calendar year basis.
