Expectations of Line Managers from HR

As an HR professional, it is crucial to understand the expectations that line managers have from the HR department. Line managers rely on HR for various support functions such as recruitment, training, performance management, and employee relations.

One of the key expectations from HR is effective communication. Line managers expect HR to communicate clearly and promptly regarding HR policies, procedures, and any changes that may impact their teams.

Additionally, line managers expect HR to provide timely assistance in resolving employee issues and conflicts. HR plays a crucial role in mediating disputes, ensuring fair treatment, and promoting a positive work environment.

Furthermore, line managers expect HR to proactively identify and address any potential HR challenges before they escalate. This includes staying updated on employment laws and industry best practices to mitigate risks and ensure compliance.

In summary, line managers expect HR to be a strategic partner that supports the organization's goals, fosters employee development, and maintains a productive and harmonious work environment. By understanding and meeting these expectations, HR can build strong partnerships with line managers and contribute to the overall success of the organization.

Excellent article. Given the fact that most HR we find today is transactional HR (salary & benefits, personnel files) or to some extent Core HR (performance appraisals, training, etc.). This just underlines the importance of strategic HR like the Visa/Immigration departments or the Resource Management functions, which are sometimes just loosely clubbed into HR. Such functions are very much capable of contributing directly to support business.
