Identification Of Critical Resources And Positions

creativitysparkles
Hi,

I need to identify critical positions and resources in my organization. Can anyone help me out, please? How do I go about identifying them? What are the possible questions I could ask my functional heads to identify these positions and resources? Also, one important thing - why and for what do we need to identify critical resources and positions? Sorry for this extremely silly question, but this is the first time I am doing this, and I really don't know where to start from. Please help!

Regards, Pallavi.

Hi,

With my experience, I can suggest the following:

1. Identify employees department-wise and categorize them as resources within the department and outside the department (for coordinating with other departments).
2. Determine if the tasks carried out by an employee can be handled by another employee as a backup.
3. Compile a list of individuals who are responsible for tasks without any backup, as these are critical resources.

A common scenario involves having two backups for a single position at all times. In this context, backup refers to having two individuals available to take over the responsibilities in case of a sudden departure. These designated individuals should be familiar with the job role and capable of performing in that position.

I have heard that HLL (Hindustan Lever Limited) has a crisis management system in place. In the event that all top managerial personnel leave the company after working hours, there is a backup team ready to handle their tasks by the next morning's first hour.

I hope you find this information useful.

Pallavi,

For an IT company, the following aspects may help you find critical resources:

1. Performers:
Any company has a blend of both performers and non-performers. Performers are the critical resources. You can discuss with the Project Manager or Project Leader to identify the performers in the team. You may also compare their past performance ratings.

2. Key Resources:
For any IT project, there will be a Key Person who may be a decision-maker or someone with rare technical skills. You can design a few innovative ideas to highlight the critical resources, which may motivate them to stay within the same company.

Remember, recognizing and retaining critical resources is essential for the success of any IT company.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

Best regards

Pallavi,

For mapping critical resources in your company, please use a 3x3 matrix based on performance and potential. Critical resources are those who are high potential and high performers.
