Seeking Advice: How to Tailor Negotiation Skills Training for Managers?

Nidhhi
Dear Members,

I have been asked to do a demo on negotiation skills at the managerial level. I have conducted negotiation skills training before; however, it was with junior-level employees. Therefore, may I request your advice on the key points I should remember while conducting training at the managerial level?

Your help is greatly appreciated. I look forward to your reply.

Thank you in advance.

Dear Nidhhi,

Rather than seek advice without searching CiteHr and the web (that's what I think you have done at the spur of the moment), please search, prepare a draft and then seek help to improve it. To set you on the path here is a link which you might find useful: Negotiation Skills for Managers on eHow.com. You can find it at Google. Have a nice day.

Dear Niddhi,

In addition to what Mr. Simhan has said, you should first circulate a questionnaire among your managers to understand what kind of issues they negotiate and with whom. Here lies the catch: sales negotiations, negotiations with vendors or suppliers, negotiations with subordinates, negotiations with superiors, negotiations with union leaders, negotiations with government authorities, negotiations with competitors, etc. Each one has a different connotation.

You need to identify the common thread among all these negotiations and then explain the uniqueness of each negotiation.

Ok...

Respected Sirs, Simhan and Dinesh,

First of all, thank you very much for your inputs.

Secondly, I did a lot of research on the same, and I did find an E-book on Negotiation skills for managers. It is around a 250-page book that was shared by a Cite HR member long back.

I got certain clues, especially to identify the negotiation skills; however, my concern is that I hardly have any option to circulate any kind of questionnaire (as Mr. Dinesh said) among those expected participants before coming down to training because there is a mediator - Training consultancy firm.

So, I need advice on whether it will be effective if I have content on the basics and fundamentals of negotiation skills and do a role play.

Lastly, I am thinking to have a role play - I will ask to create a scene through discussion and later ask participants to do a role play on the same scene created by them.

This will help them to know possible solutions which they may not have thought of before, and I will also come to know different areas of negotiation difficulties they are facing.

I hope I am on the right path. If you kindly advise, I am open to it.

Thank you for your precious time.

Regards,
Nidhhi Pathak
