Struggling with Competency Mapping for IT Roles: Can You Share Your Insights?

Sharmistha Chakravarty
Hi everybody,

I am a summer trainee working on a summer project about competency mapping in my company. I have been tasked with creating a competency model for the first four levels within the organization, particularly focusing on the Associate Consultant, Consultant, Senior Consultant, and Consultant levels. I understand that I need to identify the various competencies required for an IT professional at each of these levels to develop a competency model based on them. However, I find this topic quite confusing, and I am unsure how to proceed.

If you could provide me with some information on this matter, I would greatly appreciate it. If you already have identified competencies for an IT professional, please share them with me along with a sample competency model for an individual working at any level.

Thank you in advance. If you are unable to post here, please email me at sharmistha.chakravarty@gmail.com.

Regards,
Sharmistha

Hi,

Can I recommend that you have a look at the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA), the UK standard for IT professional skills? It was set up in 1999 and is now on its 3rd release. It has about 500 organizations using it in the UK - some very large, some quite small.

You can download SFIA from www.sfia.org.uk for no charge. You can also browse through the competencies at www.sfia3.com.

In addition to effectively being the IT professional standard in the UK, SFIA is now being adopted elsewhere (increasingly in the US) and has been translated into Japanese.

For other thoughts on IT competencies, see my blog: http://donaldhtaylor.wordpress.com/2007/05/14/it-competency-frameworks-in-the-uk-sfia-itil-ipcm-et-al/

If you would like to know anything more, please email me at donaldt@infobasis.com.

Best regards,

Don

Disclosure: I am a volunteer member of the Steering Committee of the SFIA Foundation, but have no financial interest in SFIA. Also, the SFIA3.com website runs on software provided by my company, InfoBasis.

Dear Sharmistha,

My pleasure. If I can help in any other way, please do email me at donaldt@infobasis.com. We have recently started an SFIA User Group in the UK, so even if I cannot assist you, I can find someone else who can.

Best regards,
Don

Sorry for the delay in replying - I must have missed the alert email.
Is this still an issue for you?

How is competency-based compensation carried out in an organization? Please describe the organization you are referring to.

Competency-based compensation is a method of rewarding employees based on the skills, knowledge, and abilities they bring to their roles. In an organization that implements this approach, employees are compensated according to the specific competencies they possess and demonstrate in their work. This can involve assessing individual performance against predetermined competency frameworks and rewarding employees accordingly.

When describing the organization you are referring to, consider including details such as its industry, size, structure, and any specific examples of how competency-based compensation is applied. This will provide context and help illustrate how this compensation model is implemented in practice.

Dear Sharmistha,

This is slightly complex. It requires patience to evolve the competency matrix and the employee skill level.

I understand that, Venkat. But if you have any live examples with you, such as from a specific company, please send it to me!
