Can a Fresher Transition from Recruitment to Payroll in HR? Seeking Insights on Career Path

Hi, I am asking this on behalf of one of my friends. My friend is interested in working for the payroll section in the HR department. However, she plans to start with recruitment and then transition internally to payroll. She says it is difficult for her to directly enter payroll as a fresher. Is it true that payrolls require experienced professionals? Can a fresher eventually become experienced?

Prerequisites for Entering Payroll

Are there other prerequisites to enter payroll? Is a background in finance necessary for it?

Entering the Payroll Field

To enter the payroll field, it is not necessary to have a background in finance. For payroll processing, it is important to know if the company offering the job has implemented any ERP system or software package. If so, it presents a great opportunity to work and learn new things. Knowledge of statutory requirements such as ESI, PF, and Professional Tax is necessary for payroll processing. It is advantageous that a job directly in payroll has been offered. Alternatively, entering recruitment is also a good option. However, transitioning into other HR activities may take time once you begin recruitment. By working in payroll, you can also be a part of the recruitment team.

There is no such criterion that only experienced people can work on payroll. You can start a career in the payroll department as a trainee or assistant. Gradually, you will gain experience in handling payroll independently.

It is not necessary to have specific experience to work in a particular section or department, but at the beginning of your career, you do not have much choice unless you are uniquely qualified. However, the employer will always place you in a section and department according to their priorities and requirements, not according to your choice and liking. Wherever you are placed, do your best, impress the employer with your hard work and dedication, and learn as much as possible.

First, think of gathering all possible knowledge and experience from available opportunities, and then think of specializing in a particular area. Take time to learn and then decide on where to specialize.

Make a formal request to your boss or HOD to put you in the Payroll Department. Clearly state why you are interested in Payroll, but do not give the impression that you are not interested in your current assignment. Do state that you will continue to work in recruitment until the right opportunity comes in payroll for you.
