Feeling Stuck in Construction? Seeking Advice on Switching Industries

Dear all, I am working with a leading construction company as an Officer in the P&A Dept. on one project site, and I have a total experience of three years in the construction industry itself. As I wish to change my industry and want to quit the construction field, when I discussed with some seniors, they told me it's really impossible to get into some other industry except construction as people from other industries don't really prefer construction industry guys.

Please advise me on whether I should continue with this job and keep searching for jobs or if I should quit this job without further wasting time and start my career again.

Dear Sandeep,

What you have asked for is advice on your career. Therefore, the subject heading of your post should have read "Guidance Needed on Career Planning" and not what you have given. You may want to read some write-ups on "succession planning".

If you wish to change your industry, well, you can do so. Try it out. If you succeed, well and good. Until you get the new job, continue with what you are doing.

Changing industries has its benefits. It will bring dynamism to your thinking. If you work in the same industry, your thoughts can become stereotyped. On the flip side, entering a new industry is no easy task. You have to understand the pulse of that industry and learn the keywords and concepts specific to it. Doing all this will require a lot of learning attitude. Are you prepared for this?

Dear Sir, Thank you for your time and reply. I am prepared to learn things, but it seems that things are getting out of my hands. Working at a construction site requires us to work around 14 hours daily, making it really difficult to find time for studying.

Additionally, I have attended two to three interviews where interviewers mentioned that they prefer candidates with experience in manufacturing units. Can you please guide me on how to proceed with this?

I was also working with an MNC construction company, but I left the job within 8 months because I was fed up with the working procedures, long hours, and transfers. Now, I am working with a manufacturing company. If you are considering changing industries, I recommend exploring opportunities in small manufacturing units. You may find a breakthrough and succeed in this new environment.
