Is there any special training required to be given to a mentor? Are there any codes of ethics in mentoring? Should organizations promote mentoring? What are the requirements to have an effective mentor-mentee relationship?"

Hi Kalpana,

Mentoring plays a vital role in organizational growth. You can search online; there are thousands of sites explaining the benefits of a mentoring program. However, the key lies in how effectively the mentoring program is implemented in the organization. Since it is largely an informal program, its effectiveness depends on the sincerity and buy-in from the stakeholders. HR can facilitate improvement in effectiveness by providing the following support:

1. Well-designed and communicated policy for the mentoring program.
2. Training for the mentors.
3. Selection of mentors and mentees.
4. Oversight of periodic meetings between mentors and mentees.
5. Integration of the mentoring program with the succession plan and career pathing.

It is always better to have a structured rollout of the mentoring program; otherwise, it will lose its effectiveness.
