Can anyone suggest what I should learn in labor laws? I have knowledge about TDS, PF, ESIC, PT. Now what should I learn in HR?

Understanding Key Labor Laws

I hope you are knowledgeable about the following laws:

1. Minimum Wages Act - Check the Minimum Wages Act of your state. In Delhi and Hyderabad, the Minimum Wages Act gets amended once every six months; in other states, it's once a year.
2. Bonus Act
3. Shops and Establishment Act - It covers some laws related to labor.

Dear Subramanian, this is for your information that the Minimum Wages Act is a Central Act and it does not get amended by the States at regular intervals. It seems that you are talking about the minimum rates of wages. The Shops and Establishment Act is a State Act. This Act also has nothing to do with the coverage of other labor laws. Good to see your reply. If I am not mistaken, the Shops and Establishment Act of a particular state does cover some provisions related to labor. For example, the Shops and Establishment Act of 1954 for Delhi includes rules and provisions concerning leave, minimum rates of wages, working hours, etc.

Please read about the Industrial Dispute Act and Contract Labour Regulation and Abolition Act. These are very useful social legislations. A practitioner in the HR field should know about these.

HR encompasses a wide range of concepts, including various statutory laws, labor laws, and concepts related to recruitment, selection, payroll, compliance, etc. If you specifically want to learn about labor laws, I recommend purchasing a Labor & Industrial manual, which will greatly assist you in understanding the various labor laws. TDS, EPF, ESI, and PT are deductions made from income/salary and are just a small part of HR.

If you have information about these, then I suggest you focus on payrolls, as the aforementioned deductions fall under the payroll category.

One thing I want to share is that there are more than 100 labor laws, so it is not possible to remember all of them. However, you should familiarize yourself with at least 10-12 labor laws that are in effect at your factory. Consult your seniors about the reports they submit to government authorities. Then, prioritize and go through them one by one.

On what basis is PF calculated for employees, whether on BASIC + DA or up to the limit of 6500? Is there any limit for PF calculation?
