Is My Non-HR Experience Enough to Apply for HR Manager Roles? Seeking Advice!

Hi all!

I need help from a learned HR. I am an MBA (HR) and I hold more than 8 years of corporate experience in different fields (6 years in a hospital as a Respiratory Tech where I handled admin as well, and 18 months in a BPO). I also have 1 year of HR experience as an HR executive. I would like to know if my non-HR experience will be counted when I apply for an HR job.

I hadn't thought about this earlier until I attended recent interviews. The VP-HR and other senior HRs are telling me that I am overqualified for the position of an executive and should apply for the position of Manager or AM-HR since I have experience working in the corporate sector. I may be new to this role, but my communication skills and subject knowledge are quite good.

What are your suggestions, please? If yes, then what type of questions might I face, and hints for their answers would be highly appreciated. I am waiting for your reply and thank you in advance.

The answer to this question will purely depend upon the company that you applied for. I mean for a company with no more than 100 employees, you can be labeled as overqualified, but for a large company, I don't think so. You are quite correct when you say that you know how to work in a corporate culture, but at the same time, the role you are planning to go into is a little different. Keeping in mind your 6 years of experience wherein you also took care of Admin.

I would suggest you appear for a few more companies of all sizes to help you evaluate yourself properly.

At your exp level you should be looking at AM & above level. With the level of understanding you earned through the exp will help you to relate you're self to look for higher positions than what you currently possess.
Before going for interview, based on the JD relate your exp & project your self how you can handle the situation as AM or manager.
