Any establishment wherein manufacturing activities are carried out comes under the definition of a factory. An organization meant for mining activities is said to carry out mining. Similarly, an establishment set up for plantations is considered plantations. Establishments that do not fall under factories, mines, or plantations are deemed to be shops and commercial establishments. In shops and establishments, the element of production is not present; only service is provided. Accordingly, we have separate enactments, namely, the Factories Act, Mines Act, Plantations Labour Act, and (State) Shops and Commercial Establishments Act.

Dear Deepika,

You may go through the definition of 'factory' under the Factories Act, 1948, and for knowledge of the definition of the term Shops & Establishment, you may refer to the definition of these two terms in the State Shops & Establishment Act.
