Shift Scheduling Dilemma: Is a 12-Hour Shift with Alternate Days Off a Viable Solution?

Good evening to all,

We have three shifts working, i.e., 6 AM to 2 PM; 2 PM to 10 PM, and 10 PM to 6 AM. However, our manufacturing plants are located quite far from the city. Therefore, employees are virtually spending 4 hours traveling to and fro, and 8 hours on duty, totaling 12 hours daily. Employees are feeling taxed. Transportation is arranged by the company.

We are now considering a 12-hour shift instead of an 8-hour shift, which would involve two shifts operating instead of three, with employees having every alternate day off. We would appreciate your comments on whether this change is acceptable from legal and operational standpoints.

You can adopt a 4/3 shift schedule. This entails working for 4 days, with each day being 12 hours long, totaling 48 hours. The remaining 3 days provide a stretch weekend for rest. This is a good idea.

Dear DN Rao,

It would be better to approach the area Inspector of Factories for this clarification and permission.
