Professional Tax In Maharashtra : Exemption Limit Increased

The exemption limit for professional tax from salary in Maharashtra has been increased from Rs. 2,500 per month to Rs. 5,000 per month starting today, i.e., 1st July 2009. There are no changes in the other slabs. The revised schedule is attached for your ready reference.

I am a Ph.D. student receiving a fellowship for research (16,000 per month) from the University Grants Commission. Could you please clarify whether fellowship holders are also required to pay professional tax? If not, kindly provide me with the relevant act. If so, please inform me about the payment limit.
