Handling Candidate Address Information in Resumes and Joining Formalities

Please help me out in this regard. If a candidate mentions another address instead of his permanent one in his resume, can it be considered as true? For example, one of my friends has a flat in another city (2nd address), as well as his family relatives also live in that city. He gets a job offer from that city, so what should he do? Should he mention the address where he is currently residing or can he mention the 2nd address?

Sometimes companies do all the necessary procedures in case of new joiners in the company. Can this affect the joiner?

Depends on the following:

1. If he/she is going to stay in their own flat, then they may mention the same.
2. Companies in verticals like Insurance and banking may conduct physical reference checks and also prefer local candidates. Therefore, marking a relative's address and keeping them informed would be preferable.
3. Generally, providing the current address with the header as 'Address for Communication' would suffice, along with a declaration in the cover letter stating readiness for relocation.

There is an option for the permanent address and present address. I don't think this would be very crucial; it's for communication and basic record-keeping purposes. Please mention the present address and permanent address. That will be helpful. Also, highlight which address can be used for communication purposes.

According to me, you should post your current address at the top of the resume. Then, at the end of the resume, you should also mention your native address so that the company does not get confused.

In my friend's case, he's working with Citi Group where his HR head asked him to provide a permanent address to complete some formalities. He's confused because he has been working for this company for the past 4 years. At that time, he was living as a paying guest; now he has his own flat.

So, what do you think, which address should he mention? I suggested to him to give the current address, as the rest of the things can be taken care of by the HR head. What do you think, guys?

Permanent address will be his home address (not the paying guest one). One's own house is the permanent address.

Please ask him to provide his current/present address. Typically, the parents' address is considered the permanent address. Therefore, you can also request him to mention this address. This is generally acceptable to most companies.

On a lighter note, the reason behind the HR head's request for the permanent address should be considered. If it is for sending notices or pink slips, your friend may want to reconsider providing it. I have observed some clever employees avoid disclosing their permanent address or even listing their present address as permanent.

If he has purchased his flat, then he should provide that address. If he is renting, he should obtain a document from his landlord for the company and inform the landlord that it is for documentation purposes. Did you understand? If not, please respond quickly!

He told me that his company does this thing after a certain period of time (as this point is not clear to me yet). But he was saying that this procedure is for every employee working in the company, not for him only. He's just worried because when he joined the company, he mentioned his Paying Guest address, and if he now mentions his own flat address, it can create misunderstandings. You know, nowadays companies are just waiting for a chance to find faults on employees' side.

I think this is the thing that is actually causing his tension.

The candidate should always mention their permanent address on the resume. When a candidate appears for an interview, they can always mention to the interviewer that they have a temporary address where they are currently residing. This makes things easier for both the candidate and the company.

When a candidate joins an organization and they are asked to complete their joining formalities, they should always mention their permanent and temporary addresses.

There has to be a permanent address and a present address. Write about the communication address where you can easily access your posts. Minimum address leads to less confusion and ensures safety.

One worker has mentioned all addresses of his residence, including those of his uncle, mama, and other relatives. However, he committed a crime, and the local police are now knocking at all addresses. Consider if he had provided only a single genuine address; the police would not have had to bother others.

I totally agree with your dad. From morning itself, they are discussing this foolish question. Leave it; people's address mentioning is not that much serious in today's organization. Only performance matters. That's it.

In the resume, there could be one address, and at the time of joining, he would have shifted or likely to shift. So, in the joining formality papers, whatever he furnishes (present/permanent) as the address should be taken as authentic. Of course, within a short time, the new address will not reflect in the voter's ID, bank passbook first page, driving license, etc. While opening the salary account with a bank, this would be of importance.

In that case, a rent agreement/receipt, gas bill, etc., may help in need for urgency. It's better to get the Address ID from the nearest post office by remitting Rs. 260/- (for Chennai). This would help until any of the above docs come to hand. So, this shouldn't be a big issue.

By the way, nowadays what is being sent to the employee's address? Absolutely nothing important and official from the employer.

Dear Phardeep,

Most of us have more than one mailing address apart from the one and only permanent address. Even the national ID card (NIC) in my country has two fields: one specifies the temporary address, and the other specifies the permanent address.

Now, before you mention your temporary address on your resume, do a little calculation, i.e., estimate the time the HR department will take to contact you after they receive your resume. And if nothing works out, you can always clarify things.

It is good that everyone asks any question on this citehr, but I think dignity matters and it is a question of common sense. What my friend is doing with any other group is none of my business. Yes, if he/she asks me to help, I personally guide him/her. It is also an issue that we have to take his/her consent prior to posting their matter on the citehr.

It has been observed that people are asking about husband and wife relationships here, and I think we are losing our dignity as HR professionals. This is not our core business.

So, I am not discouraging anyone, but before posting our questions here, we have to think at least twice, as we do not need to post further under the mentioned line:

We can consider it, but make sure that you have collected the correct second address. Collect his relatives' addresses and consider them as guardians along with their contact numbers.

First, tell your friend to give the change of address to his/her HR (i.e., the old address is the Paying guest and the new address is the Flat).

When any employee joins a company with one address and later changes residence, they must immediately update the address change. This will help avoid any misunderstandings.

You should always mention your current and your permanent address in your CV because many companies conduct reference checks. At first, why and for what should we hide? Whatever we are, we are. We cannot be something else if we show something else.

I don't need to ask Basmati rice rate to anybody else. I think there are some people who know the rates of everything! Everybody else didn't mind anything about my post. Thank you so much for your replies (those who really took my question seriously). I really appreciate that you supported me and spared your valuable time for this situation and replied with answers very nicely.

As I've mentioned earlier, my friend is a little bit confused regarding the address due to layoffs. This confusion arose because many of his employees were laid off due to non-performance. After talking to him again and clarifying the situation, he called me in the afternoon and explained that he was afraid because of the recent layoffs in his company. The HR department was asking for their current addresses, but in his case, it was related to a bank statement.

After considering all of your views, I suggested to him to provide his current address. I personally believe that there is no need to hide anything in this situation.
